We believe in a Lake County where no one falls through the cracks.

Where a mental health crisis does not mean a jail cell or an emergency room. Where a diagnosis does not define what someone is capable of. Where adults with serious mental illness have the same access to housing, employment, community, and care as everyone else.

That is the vision we have been working toward since 1989, and we are not done yet.

This community, right here on this page, is part of that work. Every time you share our posts, volunteer your time, make a donation, or simply stop the stigma in its tracks, you are building that future with us.

Thank you for being part of Independence Center's story.

Here is to the next 35 years. Together.

Tell us: what does a mentally healthy Lake County look like to you?

Happy Juneteenth! 🎉

Today, we celebrate freedom, resilience, and the incredible strength of community. Juneteenth reminds us that the journey toward justice and belonging is one we walk together.

At Independence Center, we believe that every person deserves to live freely and fully — in their community, on their own terms. That belief drives everything we do.

Wishing everyone a joyful and meaningful Juneteenth.

Here is something most people do not know: mental health nonprofits like Independence Center rely on donations for things that government funding simply does not cover.

Staff training. Wellness activities. Transportation. The little extras that make recovery feel human, not just clinical.

When you donate to Independence Center, you are not funding overhead. You are funding access. You are funding dignity.

A $25 donation can cover transportation for a member to attend a week of programming.
A $50 donation can help fund wellness supplies for group activities.
A $100 donation contributes to job readiness resources for members entering the workforce.

Every amount matters. Every dollar stays right here in Lake County.

If you believe everyone deserves access to mental health support, consider making a gift today. Link in bio or visit icwaukegan.org

And if giving is not an option right now, sharing this post is genuinely helpful too. Thank you.

Our volunteers do not just give their time. They give something you cannot put a price on: presence.

Showing up consistently for someone who has been let down a lot is its own kind of medicine. And the volunteers who show up for Independence Center members, week after week, help build the kind of trust that makes recovery possible.

Whether you help with our events, assist with daily activities, offer a skill or a trade, or simply spend time with our members, you become part of someone's support system in a real and lasting way.

We are looking for volunteers in the Waukegan area who want to make a genuine difference in the lives of adults with mental illness.

No special background required. Just compassion and consistency.

Interested? Send us a message or visit icwaukegan.org to learn more. And if you are already one of our volunteers, drop a heart in the comments. We see you and we are grateful.

Small things add up. Especially when it comes to mental health.

You do not need a therapist, a gym membership, or a complete life overhaul to start taking care of your mental wellbeing. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simple.

A few things we know actually help:

Go outside for 10 minutes. Sunlight and movement shift your brain chemistry in real ways.
Put your phone down an hour before bed. Your nervous system will thank you.
Say no to one thing this week that drains you without giving anything back.
Connect with one person, a call, a text, even a wave, even if you do not feel like it.
Name what you are feeling. Research shows that simply labeling an emotion reduces its intensity.

You do not have to be in crisis to deserve care. Wellness is something we all have to practice.

What is one small thing that helps your mental health? Share it below. You might help someone else.

Ever wonder what a typical day looks like at Independence Center?

Our staff start arriving early, coffee in hand, ready for whatever the day brings. And in mental health care, every day is different.

Morning might look like a group session where members practice life skills, talk through challenges, and support each other in ways that can not be taught in a textbook. Afternoon might be a one-on-one with a case manager helping someone navigate housing paperwork or prepare for a job interview. And somewhere in between, our Living Room team is standing by, ready to support anyone who walks in experiencing a crisis.

It is not glamorous work. It is hard, meaningful, people-first work.

We are proud of our team and the community we have built here in Waukegan.

What questions do you have about what we do? Ask us anything in the comments.

A job is more than a paycheck. It is purpose. Routine. Dignity. A reason to get up in the morning.

For many of our members, mental illness has made traditional employment feel impossible. And for too long, the systems around them agreed.

We do not.

Our Vocational Training program at Independence Center helps adults with serious mental illness build the skills, confidence, and real work experience they need to enter or re-enter the workforce. From resume writing to job readiness, from life skills to on-site training, we walk alongside every member at their own pace.

Because everyone deserves the chance to contribute and to be seen as more than their diagnosis.

4,000+ lives. One community. 35 years of showing up.

Since 1989, Independence Center has served over four thousand individuals in Lake County who were living with serious mental illness, many of them having experienced multiple psychiatric hospitalizations, many with dual diagnoses of mental illness and substance use.

These are not just numbers. Every one of those 4,000 people has a name, a story, and a life that matters.

Here is what that looks like in practice:
Members gaining employment for the first time in years
Families reunified
People sleeping in safe, stable housing instead of the street
Individuals managing their mental health without repeated crisis hospitalizations

None of this happens without our community. Without donors. Without volunteers. Without people who share our posts and spread the word.

You are part of this too. Thank you for being here.

Tag a Lake County neighbor below who believes in mental health for all.

Imagine going years without a stable place to sleep, without a job, without feeling like you belonged anywhere. Then imagine finding a community that finally said: we see you, and we are not giving up.

That is the kind of transformation that happens at Independence Center every single day.

We cannot share every story, but we can tell you this: the people who come through our doors often arrive in the hardest seasons of their lives. And many of them leave with something they never thought they would have again: hope, stability, and a sense of purpose.

Recovery is not a straight line. But it is possible.

If you know someone who might benefit from our services in Lake County, please share this post. A simple share could change everything.
