MYTH: People with mental illness are dangerous and unpredictable.

FACT: People living with mental illness are far more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators. The vast majority of people with serious mental illness are not violent and never will be.

This stigma causes real harm. It keeps people from seeking help. It isolates families. It makes recovery harder.

At Independence Center, we see the truth every day: our members are sons and daughters, neighbors and coworkers, artists and workers and friends. They are people who deserve the same respect and access to care as anyone else.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, help us push back on the myths. Share this post and tag someone who you think gets it.

When someone is in a mental health crisis, the emergency room is not always the answer.

That is exactly why we created The Living Room Wellness Center, a safe, calming alternative to ERs and jails for adults experiencing a psychiatric crisis in Lake County.

The Living Room is exactly what it sounds like. A place to breathe. A place to be heard. A place to get support from caring staff without the fear, noise, and clinical coldness of an emergency room.

No handcuffs. No waiting rooms. No judgment. Just help.

If you work in emergency services, healthcare, or social services in Lake County, we would love to connect. Knowing about The Living Room could mean the difference for someone in your community.

Recovery looks different for everyone. For some of our members, it means holding down a job for the first time in years. For others, it means having a safe place to sleep, or simply a community that does not give up on them.

That is what Independence Center has been building in Waukegan since 1989.

We are a nonprofit mental health organization serving adults with serious mental illness right here in Lake County. Our programs include therapy and counseling, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, supportive housing, and crisis care through The Living Room Wellness Center.

We do not just treat symptoms. We help people build lives.

Over 4,000 individuals have walked through our doors. Every single one of them matters.

If you or someone you know is struggling, we are here. Learn more at icwaukegan.org

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we want you to know: recovery is real, and it happens right here in Lake County.

At Independence Center, we walk alongside adults living with mental illness every single day. Through therapy, community support, vocational training, and crisis care, we help people rebuild their lives and find their footing again.

But we can not do it without our community.

Your donation, no matter the size, helps us keep the doors open, the lights on, and the hope alive for over 4,000 individuals we have served since 1989.

Help. Hope. Healing. It starts with you.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month—a reminder of why our work matters.

Over the past decades, Independence Center has served more than 4,000 adults in Lake County who are rebuilding their lives. Here's what the data tells us:

📊 87% of our members report improved stability and independence within 6 months
💼 Our vocational training graduates achieve a 76% employment rate
🏠 Supportive housing and case management reduce hospitalization by 60%
🆘 Our Living Room Wellness Center has diverted over 342 people from emergency rooms—providing compassionate alternatives to crisis

But numbers don't tell the whole story.

Behind each outcome is a person who once believed recovery wasn't possible. A person who showed courage by asking for help. A person who is now living with dignity, working toward goals, and contributing to their community.

Mental health is health. Access to comprehensive, whole-person care changes lives. At Independence Center, we're building that access—one member, one partnership, one victory at a time.

This month, we're grateful to our healthcare partners, funders, and community collaborators who make this possible. Together, we're proving that recovery is not just possible—it's the outcome we create.

If you're a healthcare provider, partner organization, or funder interested in expanding mental health access in Lake County, we'd love to connect.
