During the week of July 26 to August 1, 37% of mosquito pools (batches of mosquitoes) tested for West Nile virus (WNV) were positive. When pool positivity increases, we tend to start seeing human cases follow. As of today, August 5, there are no WNV cases so far this year, but we aren't out of the woods yet as we typically see the most WNV cases in August.

Take steps to help prevent mosquitoes from breeding by eliminating standing water on your property. Items like buckets, gutters, plant containers, kiddie pools, and any other items holding water around homes and businesses can become breeding sites. In addition to draining standing water, always use insect repellent (especially at dawn and dusk) and wear long sleeves and pants to cover your skin.

August is National Breastfeeding Month. Breastfeeding is a great source of nutrition for most infants. Did you know that as babies grow, breast milk will change to meet their nutritional needs?
Breastfeeding can be beneficial to both mom and baby. It is found that breastfed infants have a reduced risk of asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes, severe lower respiratory disease, and many other illnesses. Moms who breastfeed help lower their risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, ovarian cancer, and breast cancer.
The Health Department’s Women, Infants & Children (WIC) program offers breastfeeding support to eligible Lake County residents. Visit our WIC page to learn more: https://www.lakecountyil.gov/2049/Women-Infants-Children-WIC

Have you tested positive for cyclosporiasis? We encourage those who have tested positive to talk with our Communicable Disease team. By answering a few questions, you can help us better understand how individuals become infected, identify common sources of exposure, and determine how the illness may be spreading in the community.

If you've been recently diagnosed with Cyclosporiasis, you could receive a call from your local health department.

🗣️ANSWER THAT CALL. You could help us solve this outbreak.

If you think you have Cylosporiasis, follow these steps:

➡️Talk to your healthcare provider.
ask your healthcare provider if you should be tested for foodborne illnesses, like Cyclosporiasis. They can take a p**p or blood sample and test it.

➡️Write down what you've eaten and what you've done.
Write down everything you remember eating in the two weeks before you got sick. Write down restaurants you ate at and events you attended. Gather any grocery or restaurant receipts you kept.

➡️Talk to your local health department.
Report your illness to your local health department. Someone may reach out to interview you about what you ate and did before you got sick.

There's a lot that goes into making sure the lakes in Lake County are healthy, and testing the water quality is one of them. Regular testing helps to maintain and improve water quality and ecological diversity, as well as to promote healthy and safe lake conditions for swimming and recreation. Watch the video to experience a water-sampling trip out on Lake Minear with Water Quality Specialist James Fitzgerald.
