While the public is aware of some key risk factors for su***de among Veterans, they are often unaware of the devastating relationship between substance use and su***de.

Wisconsin’s veterans have given their all when either asked to serve or recognized their personal duty to serve. And while many who served in the military come home and restart their lives, many have difficulties.

To serve requires developing what is known as a “war mentality” i.e., you are part of group whose mission is to respond to a designated threat. You come from a civilian mentality which is broken down and reshaped into the war mentality - taking orders, responding with others as a single unit, and maintain heightened vigilance.

Veterans from Vietnam to Afghanistan were trained in this war mentality. Since 9-11 we have distilled and refined this mentality many times over. For many service members this transition has made them living war machines. They fight more for their brotherhood than their country. They experience conflict around them, some are casualties of the war and many unwittingly absorb the horrors of war mentally.

Following their service they are expected to be resilient and change back into their civilian mentality, not with training, not with the desensitization of a war mentality, but with a piece of paper that states, “Honorably Discharged.”

The return to civilian life for service men and women is as jarring as was entertaining the military. Returning home to a less scheduled life, readjusting to family life, trying to seek employment, or considering education.

For many military service follows the veteran home because of a physical wound or injury. Some translations are complicated by psychological injuries stemming from the war mentality, conflicts the veteran experienced, or the inability to transition from military to civilian life.

In the months to come the Wisconsin Veterans Foundation, Inc. will have posts discussing service members transition to civilian life.
We are also interested in your stories of transition.

We want your positive as well as negative experiences transitioning from active duty to civilian life. However, there are two requirements no bashing of the military or the VA and no foul language. We want your story whether from the Vietnam Era or starting the third decade of the War on Terrorism.

Our Story

Over one-half million veterans and service men and women reside in Wisconsin. An undetermined number of our Wisconsin Veterans and service men and women need some degree of information, aid or assistance. Founded in 1998 by a concerned group of Veterans and those committed to Veterans, The Wisconsin Veterans Foundation, Inc. mission was to provide Wisconsin Veterans and their families with the assistance necessary to prevent them from falling through the cracks while they awaited receipt of their benefits and services from the VA.

Today, the Wisconsin Veterans Foundation, Inc., a charitable nonprofit 501(c)(3) Veteran Service Organization (VSO), has maintained its main mission of serving Wisconsin Veterans, especially those in need of acute financial assistance. In fact, the Foundation has also preserved its linkage with the Wisconsin County Veteran Service Organization representing County and Tribal Veteran Service Officers (CVSO and TVSO) throughout Wisconsin in collecting and submitting the Foundation’s Financial Assistance Package on behalf of the Veteran or the Veteran’s family member. The Foundation has continued this because it accomplishes two major goals. First, the Foundation wants to link the Veteran with his or her CVSO or TVSO so the Veteran is aware of the benefits he or she may be eligible for through the VA, state’s Veteran service programs, the county or tribal Veteran services programs, local employment, training and education programs focusing on Veterans, and VSOs who are at the ready to assist Veterans and their families. Second, the Foundation wants the Veteran to know he or she is not alone when an issue or concern arises that may be service connected. The CVSO and TVSO is trained in knowing about the many issues facing Veterans, in many cases issues the Veteran is unaware. And honestly in some cases the CVSO or TVSO may not be able to assist the Veteran or family member, but may be able to recommend a VSO or local organization that can assist.

The Foundation, while often remaining in the background, has broadened its Vision. In the last 10 years the Foundation has been working with BestWork DATA who is offering one of their premier online career and employment packages, JOB Thoughts, to all Veterans, transitioning service members, National Guard members, Reservists, and immediate family members at NO COST. JOB JOB Thoughts is a safe and secure assessment providing 13 written reports in three easy to read packages focusing on career planning and employment planning.

The Foundation partners with other nonprofit VSOs locally, in-state, and regionally to providing assistance to Veterans, family members, or surviving spouses and family members.
