ICYMI: Eric Hanson, WisDOT Project Manager, was onsite with CBS 58 to discuss the steel sheet piling for the future retaining wall along eastbound I-94 in the cemetery section. The steel sheet piling wall will span approximately 843 feet, with steel sheets ranging from 19 to 27 feet deep that are hydraulically pressed into place.

🚧 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE 🚧

Major progress has been made on the 27th Street bridge, just south of I-94.

Crews have:
✅ Removed the concrete bridge deck
✅ Removed the steel bridge girders
✅ Demolished the bridge piers

Over the next several months, the 27th Street bridge will be reconstructed to accommodate the future expansion of I-94 East-West and the additional lanes planned as part of the project.

Stay tuned for more construction updates as work continues!

🚧 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE 🚧

Last week, crews placed concrete girders along westbound I-94 over 64th Street as part of the temporary widening of the I-94 westbound lanes.

These girders previously carried traffic on John Nolen Drive over the Monona Causeway in Madison and are now getting a second life here on the I-94 East-West project.

🔹 7 girders installed
🔹 Lengths range from 35 feet to 65 feet
🔹 Temporary widening is expected to remain in place through summer 2028

The temporary bridge widening is a key step that will allow both eastbound and westbound I-94 traffic to continue moving while crews build the new eastbound I-94 lanes and bridges.

Reusing bridge materials helps keep the project moving efficiently while putting valuable infrastructure back to work in a new location.

🚧 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE 🚧

Crews have begun installing the steel sheet piling for the future retaining wall along eastbound I-94 in the cemetery section. The steel sheet piling wall will span approximately 843 feet, with steel sheets ranging from 19 to 27 feet deep that will be hydraulically pressed into place.

Sheets are hydraulically pressed in with specialized equipment, minimizing vibrations in sensitive areas. This pressed in method also helps minimize noise and environmental impacts.

These permanent support systems play a critical role in maintaining safe excavation areas and keeping construction moving forward as the eastbound lanes are reconstructed.

🚧 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE 🚧

Progress is happening behind the scenes to keep traffic moving during future construction stages.

Crews are currently driving bridge piles to prepare for temporary widening of the I-94 westbound bridge over 64th Street. Similar work will take place soon at 68th and 70th Streets, all part of a plan to safely shift traffic and allow bi-directional travel on I-94 westbound in future stages.

🔩 At 64th Street:
• 12 steel bridge piles installed
• Average length: ~60 feet
• Diameter: 10–14 inches

These deep foundations are a key step in building the temporary support needed to keep lanes open while construction continues.
