Recycling facilities, landfills, garbage trucks and other parts of the waste and recycling industry in Wisconsin are experiencing frequent and sometimes devastating fires.

While it can be hard to determine the cause of each fire, studies have shown rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are often to blame. If damaged by equipment in waste trucks or facilities, these batteries can spark or produce enough heat to ignite surrounding materials. This photo shows the aftermath of recyclables catching fire in a city of Madison recycling truck. These fires put workers and firefighters at risk, in addition to causing millions of dollars in damage.

You can help prevent fires like these:
– Never put batteries or electronics in your recycling bin or cart.
– Take rechargeable batteries to a recycling drop-off site, like a hardware store or local recycling center.
– Recycle your electronics through E-Cycle Wisconsin. Many sites accept electronics like laptops and cellphones for free.

If you need help getting started with composting, give us a call or stop in!

We only have 5 compost bins left- get yours today!

Have you always wanted to try composting but don’t know how? Start today on Learn About Composting Day.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

– You can compost in your own backyard using bins or in a heap, though bins are usually a better way to manage the materials. You can either buy a bin or make your own with woven wire, a wooden pallet or a barrel/drum.

– Along with yard materials, certain food scraps can also be easily composted at home. Be sure to follow recommendations on what types of food scraps can be composted at home to prevent odors and avoid attracting animals and other pests.

– When backyard composting isn’t possible, check out other options. Several communities and organizations pick up compostable food waste or have food waste or yard waste drop-off locations in Wisconsin. Make sure to ask for a full list of what they accept.

Plastic bags and other films (not πŸ“Έ film) CAN be recycled with the littlest bit of extra effort.

Ever been to a grocery store? They take film for recycling.
How about Kohl's? Yeah, them too.
Grab your bag of film and bring it along with you next time you run errands!

Learn more about what plastic film can be recycled and find your local drop-off here: https://nextrex.com/

P.S. There are other places that accept plastic film too, but they don't partner with NexTrex, like Target.
