Who Am I Wednesday?

Correct Answer: White turtlehead

The plant pictured is that of white turtlehead prior to the blooms developing. The plant itself can get 2 to 3 feet tall. Has opposite, lance shaped leaves with sharp toothed edges. The stem is square. The name comes from its white, sometimes pink-tipped, tubular flowers that are densely placed which appear as turtle heads. The white turtlehead prefers full to partial sun with moist soils. So marshy areas turn out perfectly. They are a key source of nectar for pollinators, and they are also deer resistant. Historically, it was used as a medicinal plant for several ailments specifically digestive issues, skin inflammation, and jaundice. This particular plant is in front of the nature center so be on the lookout for when it blooms late summer to early fall.

Marsh Haven sadly and very unexpectedly lost a wonderful friend and ambassador last week. Sadly, Petey the opossum passed away last week. He was a wonderful ambassador, and we will greatly miss his presence at Marsh Haven. He may have only been with us a short time, but we gained memories that will last forever. We will surely miss his grumbles, his silliness, but most of all his curious and friendly temperament. Thank you to everyone who showed him the love he deserved. Rest easy little friend.
