I wrote a letter to the editor this weekend. Take a look, and please write a public comment asking for dedicated, separated space for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Dear editor, The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is currently receiving public comment on a proposed project to completely reconstruct Grand Avenue

Incremental experimental solutions (that have been proven many times over in other communities and countries) help build up political momentum for more permanent solutions.

Paint, bollards, and plastic curbs are all impactful tools to help lower speeding and save lives.

New Traffic Pattern at Greenway Cross and Coho

**Edited**

Due to speeding and dangerous driving, Fitchburg Public Works installed a traffic circle at the intersection of Greenway Cross and Coho Street like below. This traffic circle will remain in place for at least 6 months as a trial measure. If successful, the City will evaluate making the traffic circle permanent.

Regular cars will go around this circle like a normal roundabout. Trucks and buses will turn left in front of the traffic circle, because they will not be able to make a left turn behind the circle like a car. Both Coho Street and Greenway Cross will be yield controlled like a normal roundabout.

Parking will be restricted for about 40 feet on all sides of the intersection for visibility, and crosswalks will be painted in the spring when weather permits.

Stay alert and drive carefully!

Riding a bike for transportation can be a radical act for some.
I was riding my bike Tuesday morning on Thomas St bridge on the sidewalk. This is typically where I ride on the bridge, so I do not inconvenience drivers and put myself at risk of getting hit (yes, it’s legal to bike on this particular sidewalk location).

Tuesday morning I nearly got hit in some way through someone who either
-just wanted to have some fun, or
-is threatened so much by me riding their bicycle that they threw their v**e at me from their car window.

Watch for this when we get some snow again sometime! :)

Watch for this when we get some snow again sometime! :)

Wednesday Wisdom: A "sneckdown" (snow + neckdown) happens after snowfall when you can see the areas where curb extensions or intersection redesign could be used to create safer spaces for humans outside of motor vehicles.

This picture is from 2021. It’s hard to believe that it is my 4th year of commuting during winter with my bike. It took 2 years to be convinced that I could give up my own car and share one with my wife.

If the statistics are to be believed of the cost of car ownership in the US are correct, my wife and I have saved likely over $10,000 on transportation in the last two years of going down to one vehicle.

The average cost of car ownership varies widely, but on the low end the personal cost is around $4,000 a year, and the average is over $10,000 annually. This does not include the societal cost: pollution, roads, parking, and more.

Commuting via bike and having reliable public transportation can make a huge difference in a family budget and quality of life. For my family, it has meant more lattes at coffee shops, more investment into retirement, and more budget flexibility.

When you see the cost of public transit or walking/biking projects, please consider the difference it can make for a families’ budget. Perhaps consider taking your bike or a bus once this week. DM me if you have any questions about bike commuting or if you want to learn how to bike safely in the winter.

Bike and bus Wausau! Support our local transit system when it needs maintenance and expansion (it currently needs both, and we’re likely to see proposals in the not so distant future).

Whether we're headed to work, school, or holiday fun with family and friends, we all benefit from better transit service. 🌎🚌❤️
