Proper calf positioning during birth is critical to calf survival, cow health, and overall herd productivity. When malpresentations go unrecognized or are incorrectly managed, they often lead to difficult births (dystocia), which can cause injury or death to both the dam and calf, increase the need for veterinary intervention, and negatively impact future reproductive performance.

This workshop will provide producers with:

Hands-on training to identify and correct common malpresentations.

Improved confidence in assisting calving and knowing when to call for help.

Knowledge to reduce calving stress and complications, improving animal welfare.

Economic benefits through increased calf survival rates and reduced medical costs.

Whether managing a large dairy herd or a small beef operation, understanding calf positioning can minimize losses, enhance animal care, and improve long-term herd performance.

Workshop Topics:
Getting the Calf off to a good start: Colostrum Management and care of the neonatal calf
Nutrition pre- and post-calving to set the cow up for reproductive success (Dairy)
Management strategies for beef cow nutrition, health, and fertility
Stages of labor and signs to watch for - when to call for help
Calving equipment options
Colostrum quality
