Have you noticed that most firefighter gear has bright colors and reflective strips? This is why! On lots of scenes, visibility is a challenge. If we can spot each other more quickly through the smoke or dark, it helps with situational awareness—being aware of what’s going on around us.

We delivered a beautiful baby… manikin! For those skills we can’t practice often, we rely on partners like Aspirus MedEvac and incredibly specialized simulation tools. Did you know they made mama manikins that give birth? Yes, it’s as weird as it sounds. But a great way to practice.

Big thanks to the MedEvac training crew for a refresher on obstetric emergencies!

We’re #1! But not in a good way. Our air quality is 248—the worst in the U.S. right now.

KNOW THIS: not smelling smoke does NOT mean the air is safe. The tiny particles that make wildfire smoke hazardous are often still in the air even when you can’t smell them. That’s why there are sensors that set the AQI number. Those particles can reach deep into your lungs and enter your bloodstream.

Stay inside if you can. If you will be outside today, an N95 will reduce your exposure. Message us if you need some!

Above 150: An N95 is recommended for anyone who must spend time outdoors.
Above 200: Limit outdoor activity as much as possible, even with an N95. The respirator reduces particle exposure but doesn’t eliminate it.

Thanks for coming out! Always appreciate the collaboration and improving our response & effectiveness!

Last night Wausau Fire Department completed joint training with Town of Texas and Town of Hewitt First Responders. Scenarios focused on assessing and stabilizing trauma patients in the rural setting and transferring care to WFD Paramedics. First Responders are essential in rural settings, often arriving 10-15 minutes before the Advanced Life Support ambulance, providing initial patient stabilization and crucial patient updates to our incoming Paramedics. Thanks for including WFD!

THANK YOU to everyone who donated, visited, volunteered, and generally helped make Town of Hewitt Community Days a success! We appreciate every one of you! Together, we raised funds to continue to sustain both our fire department and our awesome Hewitt Hustlers 4-H group.
