Today, the Wausau Fire Department joins communities across our nation in honoring the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

Memorial Day is more than the unofficial start of summer, it is a solemn reminder of the cost of freedom. Originally established as “Decoration Day” following the Civil War in 1868, this day was created to honor those who gave their lives defending our nation and the freedoms we hold dear.

As firefighters and public servants, we understand the meaning of sacrifice, service, and commitment to something greater than ourselves. Today, we pause to remember those who never came home, and we extend our deepest gratitude to the Gold Star families who carry that sacrifice every day.

“We will never forget.”

The City of Wausau sees its share of special events, which typically bring food and refreshments on wheels in addition to our local choices.
Food trucks are a great way to enjoy local events and great food, but safety always comes first. From propane systems and cooking equipment to generators and fire extinguishers, proper maintenance and fire prevention practices help keep operators and customers safe.
The Prevention Division would like to remind anyone bringing a food truck or trailer into the city limits that there are minimum requirements to follow.
Check out the attached NFPA Food Truck Safety Fact Sheet for helpful tips and important safety reminders! 🚒🌮🔥

Yesterday, crews from the Wausau Fire Department as well as fire departments from Easton, Kronenwetter, SAFER, Mosinee and Riverside responded to a structure fire at the Sturgeon Bluff Apartments. This incident had the potential to be very tragic, but thanks to the quick and coordinated actions, the outcome was far more positive.

Firefighters worked to evacuate residents, assisting individuals from stairwells and their apartments. The fire was contained to a single apartment, though smoke impacted much of the building.

WFD would like to extend our sincere thanks to our mutual aid partners and all agencies who responded and supported this incident. A special thank you to the Salvation Army and Wausau Metro Ride for providing buses on scene to shelter residents and keep them warm during the response.

One person was transported to the hospital for minor breathing issues, according to Battalion Chief Kraig Kruzan.

Quick reminder for facilities with automatic sprinkler systems:

Annual inspections are only the starting point. Keeping your system ready to perform in a fire means staying on top of additional required testing and maintenance:

• 3-year air leak tests (dry systems)
• 3-year full flow tests
• 5-year Fire Department Connection (FDC) hydrostatic tests
• 5-year internal pipe inspections and gauge replacement

These aren’t optional. They’re required and critical to making sure your system works when it matters most.

If you’re not sure your system is up to date, contact your fire protection contractor and ask.

SHELTER - displaced residents from the storms can go to the DC Everest Middle School to shelter located at 9302 Schofield Ave.

At this time, 211 is activated for damage reports, and we are working with Marathon County Emergency Management Services on if and when there will be an activation of a Volunteer Reception Center (VRC). As the area stabilizes and we learn more, we will share updates.
