COAD COAD provides support to disaster response operations in Wisconsin. COAD is a non-profit organization that prepares local communities and community volunteers for disasters.

Operating as usual

03/12/2014

COAD is exploring a grass-roots development with the aid of three stalwart AmeriCorps members. We are delighted at the prospect of creating a true COAD which is comprised of self-sustaining, active, and trustworthy organizations.

Are you a member of a faith-based organization? A member of a local bowling league? A Lion for your local area?

If you are, we are interested in connecting with you! Milwaukee and Waukesha counties are working together to boost our volunteer network.

We are intensely seeking tight-knit groups with a keen interest in providing assistance should a disaster occur, or, more likely, should a localized event disrupt day-to-day operations.

Please reply to this post or, call 414-525-5770 and leave a message for Christine Westrich.

We will meet with you, discuss your capabilities and offer our talented skills in presenting your group with a progressive Emergency Preparedness briefing.

Most importantly, we will establish a relationship in order to call you for assistance should we need to keep our public sectors safe.

Today's emergency kit item is food... but DON'T do this!

What you need is enough non-perishable food items for each member of the family to last 72 hours. Remember to replace the items (including the water) every 6 months and if you are stocking canned goods... don't forget the can opener!

September 20th - let's review our list so far:
- plastic bin (water resistant, portable)
- first aid kit
- 1 gallon of water per person per day (3 days)
- weather radio
- heavy duty flashlight (with extra batteries)
- bleach
- duct tape
- flash drive with photos of your valuables (update every 6 months)

Today's items are for the loved ones in your house, but not for people... your pets also need to be prepared too. They need their own food, water, meds and paperwork. Shelters can turn you down if you do not have your pet's registration and vaccination records with you.

Today's item is a flash drive... it may not be there to save your life, but it will help to rebuild your home and save your financial situation.

Here's what you put on it -- photos of:
- your family and pets
- every home in your house
- open every cabinet in your kitchen and bathrooms, take pictures
- your closets, ie: clothes, shoes, coats
- lay our your jewelry and take a picture
- in your garage: cars, tools, sports equipment
- lay out all of the items in your wallet and take a picture (don't forget the backs of your credit cards for the 3 digit security code)
- copies of birth certificates, marriage certificates, etc.
- anything else you can think of that has value

Here's why: picture yourself without your wallet, your cell phone or your computer. How will you get your money? Cancel credit cards that are not 1/2 mile away somewhere due to a tornado.

Also, when the insurance company says 'yes, you have coverage... prove to me what you had' - hand them the flash drive.
