Please keep the family and friends of Ms. Suz in your thoughts and prayers as well as the WSR Community. There will be sad, sad days to follow. Like Ms. Suz would have wanted, embrace one another, support and love eachother.

Please reach out and utilize the support that is being offered. No one is alone in their grief.

It’s with a heavy heart that we share this news with the Waverly-Shell Rock community. Suz SmolikHagen, elementary principal, died yesterday. Suz had been a principal at Waverly-Shell Rock since the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year and previously served the district as a coach and AEA Team Representative. Suz was an integral, valued leader who will be deeply missed.

We understand that this news is shocking and difficult to learn. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Suz’s family and loved ones as well as those on staff who worked most closely with her. Suz touched many, many lives over the course of her career in education.

AEA crisis team members are available by phone, Zoom or in person for anyone who may need additional support during this time. Simply contact Beth Weber at (319) 321-6135 to schedule a time to meet.

Parents of Waverly-Shell Rock students may be looking for suggestions on how to talk to your child about this loss. Death may affect your child in a number of different ways depending on the age of the child, how well the child knew the deceased, and the child’s prior experience with grief. Below is a link to a report from the Dougy Center (a world-renowned organization that provides support for individuals and organizations seeking to assist children in grief) entitled Ten Tips for Supporting Children Who Are Grieving. Again, we want parents to know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE in supporting your child through this time of grief. You are welcome and encouraged to reach out for support using the number listed above.

A follow-up post will be shared once funeral arrangements are known.

Thank you to everyone who helped move West Cedar, Southeast, Shell Rock, and Carey Elementary Schools! It was amazing to see all of the Go-Hawks come together to support each other. A huge thank you to the W-SR staff and school board, students, and community members who played a vital role in making the move a success.

A special thank you to Jon Elsamiller and Pat Coughlin for driving the forklifts all day, and to Kevin Miller for providing the pallets for moving boxes and for allowing us the use of a cube truck. Thank you to the W-SR Football team for moving the pallets around the schools ahead of time, and to the W-SR Baseball and Football teams for helping move all day.

Our gratitude also goes to Jerry Elsamiller, David Fox, and Dennis Epley for doing an excellent job running the pallet jacks in the trucks. We appreciate Greg Miller and Miller Hardware for providing a semi truck and cube truck for the move, as well as for driving the trucks. Additionally, thank you to Jeff Reints for providing an additional cube truck during the move.

A big thank you to all of our families who donated boxes for the move. Once again, thank you to everyone who helped us out. We look forward to a great summer and an awesome start to the
2024-25 school year this fall at W-SR.

Thank you to every single person behind the scenes who helped in any and every way to make today's move smooth and so very quick. Thank you to all families who donated boxes.
