PENNDOT TO CLOSE PART OF WAVERLY TWP STARTING MONDAY 6/21/26

The state Department of Transportation will close a portion of Carbondale Road in Waverly TWP spanning Ackerly Creek next week for a culvert replacement project.

The road will be closed to motorists from SR 407 to I-81 beginning Monday through Fall.

PennDOT has set up the following detours around the closed portion:

Traveling East on Carbondale Road: Continue straight on Route 407 northbound for three miles, then turn right onto Route 524 east, continue on Route 524 east for three miles, turn right onto I-81 south, then continue on I-81 south for a mile and take Exit 197 for Route 632.

Traveling West on Carbondale Road: Turn right onto I-81 north for one mile, then take Exit 199 for Route 524, turn left onto Route 524 west continue on Route 524 west for three miles, then turn left onto Route 407 south and continue on Route 407 for almost three miles. The detour will end at the intersection of Route 407 South and Carbondale Road.

Brush and Stick pick up will be held the week of June 8th. Please bring brush/sticks to the curb. The limbs have to be less than 4" in diameter. Registration is not required. Thank you!

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Waverly Township Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on April 16, 2026, at 6:00 P.M. at the Waverly Community House, 1115 N Abington, Waverly Township, PA 18471, to consider proposed amendments to the Waverly Township Zoning Ordinance. The proposed amendments include adding a definition for the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000 (RLUIPA); revising use classifications related to places of worship/assembly and oil and gas extraction; adding an RLUIPA compliance statement; and deleting supplemental requirements for places of worship/assembly and allowing the use in all zoning districts. A copy of the proposed zoning amendment is available for public inspection at the Waverly Township Municipal Building , 1 Lake Henry Drive, Waverly Township, PA 18471 during regular business hours, 9:00am to 4:00pm, at no charge, or a copy may be obtained for a charge not greater than the cost of reproduction thereof. A copy thereof shall be supplied to The Scranton Times newspaper, and an attested copy of the proposed ordinance shall be filed in the county law library. The public hearing will be followed by the special meeting of the Board of Supervisors at 7:30pm held at 1115 N Abington Road, Waverly Township, PA 18471 at the above address at which time the proposed amendment may be considered for adoption.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT Waverly Township Zoning Hearing Board will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, March 25, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. in the Waverly Community House, located at 1115 N Abington Rd, Waverly, Pennsylvania, to address the appeal filed by Terrence and Margaret Neville, appealing the November 24, 2025 issuance of Zoning Permit No. 2025-5 by Waverly Township for the property located at 216 Miller Road, Waverly, PA 18471. The permit being appealed approved the Place of Worship Land Development Plan for the Chabad of the Abingtons, Inc., subject to all applicable Ordinances of Waverly Township, including but not limited to Subdivision and Land Ordinance, Uniform Construction Code, Stormwater Ordinance and Flood Plain Ordinance. Any interested person or persons may attend and participate.

Waverly Township Annual Clean-up Day! Time to clean out your garage and basement! This is your once-a-year chance to get rid of bulk items safely (that two men can lift).

💵 Fee: $30 – register & pay online or at the township office. Due to rising costs, we must charge a small fee of $30 per household.

🛑 Not Accepted: Paint with paint, auto batteries, electronics, household trash, tires

❄️ Appliances with Freon (fridges, ACs, dehumidifiers) need a certificate

🛏 Mattresses must be wrapped in plastic. Bags are available at hardware stores for a fee.

📍 Curbside by Friday, May 22 (earlier is better!)

Waverly Township Zoning Hearing Board Meeting - 12/1/25
Announcement: The Waverly Township Zoning Hearing scheduled for tonight at 5:00PM at the Waverly Community House, intended to address the zoning application of the Chabad of the Abingtons, Inc., has been canceled. Following the last hearing, Waverly Township issued a zoning permit to the Chabad of the Abingtons, Inc. approving the project. Subsequently, the applicant has withdrawn its application appealing the determination of the Zoning Officer and requesting a Special Exception for its property.
Members of the Zoning Hearing Board, along with its solicitor, will be present at the Community House tonight to formally announce the withdrawal of the application. However, no testimony will be taken as the matter is now deemed moot, and the Zoning Hearing Board no longer retains jurisdiction over this matter.
