Keeping Waxahachie beautiful means caring for everyone who calls it home, including our four legged, feathered, and occasionally very tiny friends. ๐ŸŒฟ

And some of Waxahachieโ€™s tiniest residents are officially back where they belong. ๐Ÿ’š

Heather, a permitted wildlife rehabilitator with 25 years of experience, recently released two litters of young opossums along one of our nature trails. After being rescued, cared for, and prepared for life on their own, these little ones were responsibly returned to a suitable natural habitat.

Heather has also released rehabilitated owls, raccoons, and other native wildlife along the trail. Each release is carefully handled by an experienced professional to give the animals their best chance at a healthy life in the wild.

Not all cleanups go according to plan, but the team from Google proved that a good cleanup crew knows how to roll with the punches.

Or maybe in this case, the waves.

On Friday, 28 Google employees joined Keep Waxahachie Beautiful for what was originally planned as a kayak cleanup at Waxahachie Lake. After recent storms, the shoreline had collected a significant amount of trash and wood debris. Unfortunately, high winds made water access unsafe, so the group quickly shifted gears and focused their efforts along the shoreline at Spring Park.

And they made a huge impact.

Together, they removed 496 pounds of trash from our waterways, including 3 tires. They also hauled thousands of pounds of driftwood into organized piles, making it possible for our Parks Department to continue clearing the debris.

Google, thank you for your flexibility, hard work, and willingness to help Keep Waxahachie Beautiful.

If your family, office, church group, or organization would like to host a litter cleanup, we would love to help you get started.

We just finished submitting the final grant wrap up paperwork for the N. P. Sims Library Pollinator Garden and weโ€™re feeling incredibly grateful and want to celebrate.

This project would not have been possible without the generous support of the Our Texas, Our Future Grant through H-E-B and Keep Texas Beautiful.

The garden has now been in the ground for almost two months and it is truly beginning to bloom. Most of the plant identification signs have been installed and the main educational signage should be completed by July. Production took a little longer than anticipated, but itโ€™s exciting seeing everything come together.

Thank you again to the Nicholas P. Sims Library for helping create space for this project, the Indian Trail Master Naturalists for their continued maintenance and stewardship of the garden, and A Oasis Pools and Outdoor Living for generously donating the landscape design, boulders, stones, and mulch that helped bring the space to life.

We are also deeply grateful to all 51 volunteers, including 21 kids, who showed up for planting day and helped turn this vision into a reality.

Watching the garden grow has already been incredibly rewarding, and we hope it continues serving as both habitat and a place for environmental education for years to come.

Keeping Waxahachie Beautiful starts in our schools.

Recently, we had the opportunity to attend a special event at the Next Generation Education STEM Garden at Waxahachie High School, a space lovingly maintained and enjoyed by the Life Skills classes. The incredible staff, volunteers, and students behind the rain garden welcomed community partners for an afternoon of learning, connection, and celebration.

Students served as ambassadors for the event, guiding guests through the garden, sharing demonstrations, and offering delicious samples grown from their hard work. The garden produces a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, melons, and herbs that students help plant, harvest, and enjoy throughout the year. From homemade pumpkin dishes to fresh salsa, the program continues to create meaningful hands on learning experiences. According to the students, โ€œpizza from the gardenโ€ was the crowd favorite.

Members of the Indian Trail Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists were also there to showcase innovative technology being used at the Mockingbird Nature Preserve in Midlothian. Their work is helping make nature more accessible for visually impaired visitors by providing opportunities to learn about the plants and habitats throughout the preserve.

We left inspired by the students, educators, volunteers, and community partners helping cultivate the next generation of environmental stewards right here in Waxahachie.
