Crews from Waxhaw Fire Department responded to a tractor fire with a hay trailer attached in a newly constructed neighborhood. Companies worked quickly to bring the situation under control, knocking down the fire in a short amount of time and preventing further spread to nearby areas. Members also had to d**e and dam a few areas to control the diesel fuel and other fluids from entering the drainage system.

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.

🚩 Red Flag Warning in Effect 🚩

Waxhaw Fire Department would like to make our community aware that our area will be under a Red Flag Warning due to dry conditions, low humidity, and gusty winds starting tomorrow at 8am. These conditions create an enhanced risk for fast-moving and difficult-to-control brush fires.

🔥 What this means:
Fires can start easily and spread rapidly
Even small sparks can quickly become large fires
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged

🚫 Please avoid:
Burning yard debris or trash
Using fire pits or outdoor fireplaces
Discarding ci******es on the ground
Operating equipment that may produce sparks

Report any signs of smoke or fire immediately by calling 911. Our crews are always ready to respond, but we need the community’s help to prevent fires before they start. A little caution now can prevent a big emergency later.

With the recent stretch of dry weather, low humidity, and breezy conditions, the risk for fires spreading quickly is very high across our area.

The Waxhaw Fire Department along with the NC Forest Service strongly asks residents to refrain from any outdoor burning at this time. Even small debris or yard burns can quickly get out of control in these conditions and threaten nearby homes, woods, and property.

If you have plans to burn yard debris, please consider waiting until conditions improve. A single spark carried by the wind can travel farther than you think.

If you are noticing smoke in the area or the smell of something burning today, it is likely due to controlled burns taking place in South Carolina.

With the current weather conditions, smoke from these prescribed burns can travel several miles and settle into nearby communities, including parts of the Waxhaw area. These burns are planned and conducted by forestry officials to help reduce wildfire risk and maintain healthy forests.

At this time, there are no active fires in the Waxhaw Fire District. If you see a large amount of smoke, visible flames in an unexpected area, or have an emergency, please do not hesitate to call 911.
