Located near the northern edge of the Okefenokee Swamp, this park is home to many fascinating creatures and plants and has many great recreational opportunities. Comments and photos of Georgia’s State Parks & Historic Sites are welcome. Moderation of comments is governed by Board of Natural Resources Rule 391-1-10. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources may remove comments not related to the

“Hey y’all — my name’s Shelly Mae, and I’m a gopher tortoise enjoying another beautiful day exploring Laura S. Walker State Park.

My family and I like to wander around the park, soak up the sunshine, and every now and then cross the road to reach new burrows and feeding spots. Unfortunately, fast-moving cars and slow-moving tortoises don’t mix very well.

So while you’re enjoying the park too, please keep an eye on your speed and watch for wildlife crossing the road. We’d sure appreciate it — and we promise to wave a little turtle thank-you as we pass by.” 🐢💚

Nature is a truly awesome thing! The Barred Owl (Strix varia) is a amazing predator that feeds on small animals like squirrels, mice, rabbits and also fish. It uses the ambush approach for hunting and will usually perch and pounce on their unexpecting prey! Plenty of sights to see at Laura S. Walker State Park!
