Weather Update

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and continue through the evening. Storms may produce strong wind gusts up to 50 mph, frequent lightning, heavy rainfall, and areas of standing water on roadways.

🌧️ If possible, stay indoors during the storms and avoid unnecessary travel. Do not drive through standing water. Even shallow water can be dangerous, and conditions can change quickly. If you cannot see the curb or edge of the roadway, find an alternate route.

🌡️ Hot and humid conditions will continue through next week. Heat index values are expected to reach 103°–107° today, with values as high as 105°–110° possible next week.

Please remember:
• Stay weather-aware and monitor local forecasts.
• Limit prolonged outdoor activity during peak heat.
• Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
• Check on elderly family members, neighbors, children, and pets.
• When thunder roars, go indoors.

Be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions throughout the afternoon and evening. Stay safe, Waycross and Ware County.

Weather Advisory – City of Waycross

As we prepare for more rain over the next few hours, please travel only if necessary.

If you encounter standing water, do not drive through it. If you cannot see the curb, do not risk it. Find an alternate route.

If travel is unavoidable, slow down and use caution. Driving too fast through standing water can create additional hazards and push water into nearby homes and businesses.

Please be patient. It takes time for water to recede after heavy rainfall, even after the rain begins to let up. Give drainage systems time to work and allow water levels to drop before traveling whenever possible.

If you can't see the curb, don't risk it. Stay safe, Waycross.

Please do not drive through standing water.

While water levels are beginning to recede, it takes time for drainage systems, ditches, and canals to fully clear excess water.

Driving through standing water—especially at higher speeds—can push water onto nearby properties, increasing the risk of flooding for homes and businesses along the roadway.

If you must travel, slow down, use caution, and never drive through water if you cannot determine its depth. Stay safe and help protect your neighbors.

⚠️ Heavy Rain Safety Reminder

Please use caution while traveling today and drive only if necessary. During periods of heavy rainfall, it takes time for storm drains, ditches, and canals to handle the increased water flow.

🚫 Never drive through standing water. Even shallow water can hide hazards, damage vehicles, or cause drivers to lose control.

✅ Slow down
✅ Increase following distance
✅ Watch for flooded roadways
✅ Turn around if you encounter water covering the road

Stay safe and continue to monitor local weather conditions.

Today, the City of Waycross joins communities across the nation in commemorating Juneteenth — a day that marks the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates freedom, resilience, and hope.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas learned they were free. This historic moment serves as a reminder of the progress made and the work that remains as we strive to build stronger, more inclusive communities.

As we reflect on this important day, we honor the enduring contributions, rich culture, and lasting legacy of Black Americans whose achievements have helped shape our nation and our community.

May Juneteenth be a time of celebration, reflection, education, and unity as we continue working toward a future where opportunity, respect, and equality are shared by all.
