We hope everyone had a great summer! With school back in session starting August 31st, we want to remind everyone to plan ahead and use extra caution on the roads.

Expect longer commute times, increased pedestrian traffic, and school buses making frequent stops throughout town. Drivers are required to stop for school buses when their red lights are flashing and the stop sign is extended. Please be patient and never attempt to pass a stopped school bus.

The Wayland Police Department will be increasing traffic enforcement as part of our “Slow Down Wayland” initiative, with a focus on speeding and distracted driving.

Help us keep our students and community safe. Slow down, stay alert, put the phone away, and give yourself a few extra minutes to get where you’re going.

🎓 Day 5 — Graduation Day! 🎓

That’s a wrap on the Wayland Youth Police Academy!

We could not be more proud and impressed with our Junior Officers and everything they accomplished throughout the week. From PT and classroom instruction to hands-on scenarios, teamwork, and plenty of challenges along the way, this group brought an incredible amount of enthusiasm, effort, and positive energy every single day. Our instructors had nothing but great things to say about this group!

A special thank you to our fantastic instructors — Officer Bowles, Officer Zink, Officer Whitney, Officer Walker, and Officer Stoller — for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to making this academy as successful, educational, and fun as possible. A week like this would not be possible without the time and effort they put in.

We would also like to thank the Wayland School Department for allowing us to use Wayland Middle School as our home base for the week. We truly appreciate the support!

Most importantly, congratulations to all of our graduates! 🎓🚔 We hope each of you had a great time, learned something new, made some great memories, and walked away with an experience you’ll remember for years to come.

🚔 Day 4 of the Wayland Youth Police Academy! 🚔

Day 4 was action-packed and left our Junior Officers soaked, covered in dirt, and smiling from ear to ear!

We kicked off the day with the Army National Guard Recruiting Team, who brought out their inflatable obstacle course. Junior Officers put their speed, teamwork, and determination to the test while competing in squad-vs-squad relays and head-to-head 1v1 races! 💪🇺🇸

After lunch, it was time to put everything they’ve learned throughout the week into action. Junior Officers worked together to utilize the drone to get eyes on their objective, gather information, and devise a plan of attack before putting their tactics to the test. Their teamwork, communication, effort, and enthusiasm today were incredible!

We also took some time to celebrate Junior Officer Henry’s birthday with cupcakes! 🧁🎉 Happy Birthday, Henry!

A huge thank you to the Army National Guard Recruiting Team for helping make today another memorable experience for our academy.

Tomorrow is our 5th and final day — GRADUATION DAY! 🎓🚔 We can’t wait to celebrate everything these Junior Officers have accomplished this week!

🚔 Wayland Youth Police Academy — Day 3! 🚔

Day 3 was another action-packed day for our junior officers!

We kicked off the morning with PT and a soccer game before putting their decision-making skills to the test with virtual scenario training on our MILO system. The group also had the opportunity to tour both the Wayland Police Department and Wayland Fire Department and get a closer look at the work our public safety teams do every day.

After lunch, we had a very special visit from the Army National Guard Counterdrug Task Force and Counterdrug Aviation Crew, who flew in for an awesome helicopter demonstration! 🚁 The crew spent time with our junior officers, showed them the aircraft, and shared some valuable words of wisdom about teamwork, service, and leadership.

Our junior officers once again brought great energy and enthusiasm throughout the entire day. We’re extremely proud of the effort they continue to put into every activity!

🔥 A special shoutout to the Wayland Fire Department for their assistance and for helping make today another great experience for our academy.

🇺🇸 We would also like to extend a huge thank you to the Army National Guard Counterdrug Task Force and Counterdrug Aviation Crew for taking the time to visit us and putting on an incredible demonstration for our junior officers. We truly appreciate your support and your willingness to help make this academy a memorable experience for them!

🚔 Wayland Youth Police Academy — Day 2! 🚔

Day 2 is in the books, and our Junior Officers continue to impress us with their hard work, enthusiasm, and willingness to take on every challenge thrown their way!

Today’s academy was action-packed. Our Junior Officers started the day with an intense PT session before getting hands-on experience with:

🏃 Physical Training
🚁 Drone operations and training
🚔 Field Sobriety Tests
🛡️ Indoor tactical movement and scenarios
🐕 A K-9 demonstration from the Framingham Police Department K-9 Unit

Our Junior Officers did an outstanding job throughout the entire day. They worked hard, stayed engaged, asked great questions, and showed tremendous teamwork from start to finish.

A special thank you to the Framingham Police Department K-9 Unit for taking the time to join us and provide such a great demonstration. We truly appreciate your continued support and partnership in helping make this academy a memorable experience for our Junior Officers.

🚔 Yesterday was Day 1 of the Wayland Youth Police Academy! 🚔

We’re off to a great start with an awesome and motivated group of kids who came ready to learn, work hard, and get involved!

It was a busy first day that gave our recruits a hands-on look at several different aspects of police work. We were impressed with their enthusiasm, teamwork, and willingness to jump into every activity.

A great start to the week — we’re looking forward to another great day tomorrow!

Wayland Police Department — Community Update

The Wayland Police Department would like to provide the community with information regarding the police activity that occurred early this morning on Andrew Avenue.

During the evening shift, our officers received a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) for a vehicle and male individual associated with an incident that had occurred in Acton earlier in the evening.

At approximately 3:00 a.m., after responding to an alarm in the area and conducting routine area checks, Officer Fors located the vehicle and individual matching the information provided. Sgt. Fitzpatrick coordinated a joint response with mutual aid partners, Acton Police and the Massachusetts State Police. Due to Officer Fors's observation and Sgt. Fitzpatrick's effective command of the scene, the individual was detained without incident, and our officers were able to coordinate with the Acton Police Department. Acton officers, with the assistance of the Massachusetts State Police, took custody of the individual as part of their investigation.

Officer's from the Sudbury Police Department, Lincoln Police Department and Weston Police Department assisted on scene as well and we thank them for their assistance.

We understand that an increased police presence can sometimes raise concerns within the community. Due to the sensitive nature of this investigation, details were limited, and we appreciate everyone's patience and understanding as this information develops.

We would like to recognize our midnight shift officers and JCC Dispatch personnel for their vigilance and professionalism. Their actions demonstrate the importance of proactive patrol and strong communication between neighboring law enforcement agencies.

We are thankful for the support of the Middlesex District Attorney's Office. Any further inquiries should be directed to their office.

Finally, our thoughts are with the victims and their family during this incredibly difficult time. We also extend our condolences to the Acton community, the Acton-Boxborough Regional School District, and all those affected by this tragic event. The Wayland Police Department stands ready to support the Acton Police Department, the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, and all agencies involved in this investigation in any way needed. We ask that the community respect the privacy of those grieving as this process moves forward.

🚔 Community Notice: Police Training on Thursday, August 6

The Wayland Police Department would like to inform residents that officers will be conducting a scheduled training exercise on Thursday, August 6, at Greenways Conservation.

During the training, you may notice an increased police presence and emergency vehicles in the area. Please know that this is a planned training exercise, and there is no danger to the public.

Ongoing training is an important part of ensuring our officers are prepared to respond safely, professionally, and effectively in emergency situations. We appreciate your patience and understanding if you see activity at Greenways Conservation during the exercise.
