We have taken delivery of 23 new Motorola Minitor 7 pagers and 6 Kenwood P25 portable radios. This equipment is being funded through a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant (which we announced winning previously). We expect reimbursement of just over 22K from FEMA soon. The grant program has a 5% cost match that we covered. All of these items were purchased on state bid pricing and we compared to open market pricing to ensure we got the best price possible. We would like to thank Steuben County Emergency Services Radio Division for assisting with the purchase and programming.

The pagers are being issued to all active members and come with amplified charging bases that should also increase reception in member's homes. These replace 8 year old pagers that have begun to show their age. Pagers are a vital piece of our volunteers link to dispatch. They trigger when dispatch sets the tones off.

The Kenwood portables radios will allow all members of our ambulance crews to have radios on them during calls. This will improve safety on scenes and help interoperability with other agencies. These portables are programmed to allow communication with both Steuben and Livingston counties.

Monday night, several of our members took the ResponderStrong Peer Support class. We will be running another session at a different time to catch our volunteers who have different work shifts.

Our volunteers are the most important resource for SWEMS. We recognize the stress that our members are under - not just from what we see on some calls, but also everyday stress seems to have increased. Because of this, SWEMS has been working towards an open environment that supports our volunteers. This image shows the many ways our organization and membership tries to support each other.
1 - Peer support - We have decided to train all of our members on the ResponderStrong program.
2 - Chaplain Support - Dan Finch has offered to help our members as our Chaplain. He is a former volunteer firefighter/EMS provider and is pastor of the Wayland United Methodist church, as well as having been trained in CISD techniques.
3 - Member / Family Assistance Program through our insurance carrier - this is an EAP style phone service aimed at first responders and their families so they have a resource to call that is more anonymous
4 - Steuben County Emergency Services makes available a critical response team for major incidents and is available for other forms of assistance.
5 - Physical Health - We have a small gym at the station and encourage our members to team up to motivate each other. We also have installed a kitchen and plan on reviewing choosing and cooking healthier food options with members.

Part of the peer support is the atmosphere within the agency. You may see a group of members meeting up at the station and getting their steps in walking around the village or our members getting together on Friday nights to share dinner, watch a movie or play some games. Not only does this help improve our member's lives, but also helps ensure we have members available for calls.

If you are looking for a great group of people to spend time with and also want to volunteer your time to help our community, please feel free to talk to any member, message us here on FB, or stop down any Friday evening (or anytime members are in the station). If you would like more information, stop in and we'll give you a tour of the historic Bennett building and show you our ambulances and equipment.

The members of SWEMS would like to extend our condolences to the family of Eugene Teed.

Captain Teed served with distinction under the Wayland Fire Department, a legacy agency of Springwater Wayland EMS, as Ambulance Captain for 17 years. He was also an EMT instructor, helping to train EMS providers across the region.

This is a continuation of our series of videos to tell the public about our volunteers and the equipment we use. In this video, we talk about BLS Emergency CPAP, which is a skill that our agency was approved for just a few months ago. The members of SWEMS try to stay abreast of policy changes and new skills so that we can provide the best service to the members of the community that we serve.

If you are interested in volunteering, we have opportunities for EMTs and Drivers as well as "social members" who assist with administrative duties, committees, and more.

SWEMS is always looking for people willing to volunteer to help our community.

Weekday daytime coverage is the hardest time of the day for most people who are willing to volunteer. So, we are reaching out to see if anybody who has recently retired or works 2nd or 3rd shifts is interested in volunteering.

SWEMS attempts to make it as easy as possible for members to participate in training, meetings, etc. We utilize Google for nonprofit tools including email, Meet, and online classrooms to maintain communication and training for members who work various shifts. We also partner with Aura Prep to offer high quality hybrid EMT classes that you can take either day time or evening hours.

If you are interested in volunteering, please let us know, you can message up here on Facebook, call and leave a message at our non-emergency number 585-213-4049, or talk to any member.

Did you let your EMT card lapse? Are you interested in getting your EMT card back and helping your community?

SWEMS is always looking for great people who want to volunteer to help our community. We will sponsor you for EMT class as long as you are a member in good standing.

Aura Prep does a great job with their hybrid classes and several of our members are graduates of their classes. These hybrid classes are probably the most flexible classes you will find and is a great option for shift workers.
