CASA Volunteers... Visit a child regularly to ensure they are safe and supported.

Every other Saturday, Liam knows someone is coming just to see him. Since entering foster care eight months ago, 8-year-old Liam has changed schools, bedrooms, and routines more than once. But one thing has remained the same: his CASA volunteer. During regular visits, they color, play games, and talk about school, friends, and how things are going.

By spending consistent one-on-one time together, Liam’s CASA volunteer can see how he’s adjusting in his foster home, ask about school, and ensure his physical and emotional needs are being met. Those firsthand observations give Liam an unbiased voice in court and keep his best interests at the center of every decision.

CASA Volunteers... Stand beside children during some of life’s hardest moments.

For nine-year-old Ava, some days brought more emotions than others. As she navigated the uncertainty of foster care, Ava’s CASA volunteer became a trusted adult who always brought plenty of patience, compassion, and understanding. After visitation with her mother, Ava often struggled with the moment of saying goodbye and returning to her foster home. Her CASA volunteer gave Ava space to share her feelings or sit in silence; she listened to her questions and as she shared her fears. The CASA reminded her it was more than okay to miss her family while feeling safe and supported where she was, and that one didn’t hurt the other. By being present during these difficult transitions, Ava felt seen, comforted, and less alone.

CASA Volunteers... Advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children.

When a child enters foster care, they enter an unfamiliar world: new faces, new rules, and life-changing decisions made by adults who barely know them. Through it all, a CASA volunteer is the one constant focused solely on that child’s best interests. By building a trusting relationship, gathering information from those involved in the child’s life, and speaking up in court, a CASA volunteer helps ensure a child’s needs are seen, heard, and protected.

Whether advocating for educational support, medical care, family connection, or simply the chance to be a kid, CASA volunteers change the trajectory of a child’s life. Every child deserves someone who stands beside them, speaks up for them, and never loses sight of what they need most. It’s what we’d want for the children in our own lives. Why not them?

We are thrilled to introduce our 2026 Champion For Children Gala Honoree: Hon. Daniel J. Yablonsky, Superior Court Judge of New Jersey (Ret.)

Daniel J. “Bud” Yablonsky served on the Superior Court of New Jersey for 15 years. He sat in both Passaic and Essex counties, primarily in the Chancery Division, Family Part, presiding over domestic violence and Children in Court cases. CASA Volunteers... Provide the court with objective, child-focused information.

Seventeen-year-old Zoe was looking ahead to graduation while weighing important decisions about her future. Each month, and before a court hearing, Zoe’s CASA volunteer met regularly with her, spoke with her teachers, resource parents, therapist, and caseworker, and gathered information about her goals, successes, and struggles.

During the court hearing, the CASA volunteer provided the judge with an objective picture of how Zoe was doing: highlighting academic progress, recommending she remain in her current school through graduation, that she continue counseling, and she begin an independent living program. The CASA volunteer also asked the court to ensure Zoe understood she could continue receiving support after turning 18 if she chose to remain in care, giving her a bit longer to help prepare for adulthood and life on her own.

CASA Volunteers... Help judges make decisions based on a child’s needs.

Fifteen-year-old Jordan has spent more than half his life in foster care. He finally found a place, a home, where he felt settled and supported. Jordan worried another court hearing meant another major change. After multiple moves, he’d finally built trust with teachers, made a couple solid friends, and felt peace around a set of resource parents. His CASA volunteer listened to Jordan’s concerns and spoke with the important adults supporting him to gather details from all sides on what was helping him succeed.

During the hearing, the CASA volunteer shared with the judge the many reasons why maintaining Jordan’s current placement was so important, and also recommended continued support for his emotional well-being. That advocacy helped the court make decisions based on Jordan’s needs today as a young man — not just circumstances that brought him into care as a young boy. Stability was the foundation Jordan so desperately needed, and had finally found. Now, everything could stem from that, including a future he’d not yet dare to imagine.
