Amazing Brownies from troop 717 officially completed their Wonders of Water Journey after a jam-packed 4 hours at McKaig learning why water is so essential to our planet.

• They learned how people in other parts of the world have to carry water home, often balancing containers on their heads.

• They studied how stream pollution harms local wildlife and discovered how small gestures, like shorter showers and turning off the tap while brushing teeth, make a big difference.

• After hearing stories of real-life water heroes, they hiked to a historic home to see a hand-pumped well and a working spring house.

Of course, water is also a blast! The girls cooled down with a fun water balloon game right before lunch.

Way to go, Troop 717! Thank you for helping to make the world a better, cleaner place.

Girl Scout Cookie sales pave the way for an epic European adventure!

Troop 7157 started their journey all the way back in 2015 as Kindergarteners. While their very first bridging ceremony was on the Roberts School playground, their first *real* bridging ceremony happened on June 2017, right on the McKaig Monkey Rock Bridge.

Since then, the woods of McKaig have truly become their second home. As Troop Leader Stacy Albert puts it:
"McKaig has ALWAYS felt like Girl Scout Troop #7157 'home'. We spent so many of our weekly meetings exploring the trails while hiking. Our girls have loved every second in the woods - whether it was orienteering, letterboxing, or doing creek exploration and water samplings... So much of our troop's outdoor progression was rooted in McKaig. #7157 learned how to pitch their first tents right at the beginning of the trails at the nature center."

Over the years, these scouts have given so much back to our community - building and donating bat boxes to the Nature Center, mastering orienteering, learning inside the historic schoolhouse, and installing the hand-painted rain barrel for the garden behind the school to name a few. They've also loved working with younger scouts to pass on their passion for the outdoors.

Just last week, a group of 5 original Daisies came full circle, holding their final Bridging to Adulthood ceremony right where it all began. Highlighting their incredible dedication, 4 scouts have earned their prestigious "Gold" Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting, equivalent to the rank of Eagle Scout!

A Special Thank You to the Troop Leaders
None of these incredible milestones would have been possible without the tireless dedication of Troop Leader Stacy Albert and her co-troop leaders. For over a decade, they have volunteered their time, energy, and hearts to organize wonderful, life-changing adventures for these girls. Your passion for youth leadership and outdoor education is truly inspiring, and our community is infinitely better because of your dedication!

Now, those years of hard work and Girl Scout Cookie sales are paying off in a huge way! The troop saved up their cookie money and, in just a few weeks, they are heading to Europe for the ultimate adventure. They even have an incredible lineup of international bridging ceremonies planned:
• London: Tower Bridge
• Amsterdam: Torensluis Brug
• Paris: Pont Neuf
• Venice: Rialto Bridge
• Barcelona: Pont del Bisbe

Congratulations to Troop 7157 on bridging to adulthood! Thank you for making McKaig such a special part of your story, and have an amazing time exploring Europe!

Mind the Turtles!
Did you know that we are currently in the peak of turtle breeding season? Species like snapping turtles and box turtles are actively looking for mates and searching for the perfect areas to lay their eggs.

Because they are "in search of love," they are much more likely to try to cross busy roads or encounter people. These lovely creatures are not exactly quick moving, so if you see one trying to cross a road, they may need a little help getting to safety.

Tips for Turtle Rescue:
• Always move them in the direction they were heading. Turtles are determined! If you put them back on the side they started from, they will just turn right around and venture back into harm's way.

• Keep yourself safe. While helping turtles is incredibly important, please never put your own safety at risk on busy roads.

• Handle with care. Pick them up gently by the back of their shell. For snapping turtles, it's best to gently use a shovel as they can bite!

Spotted in McKaig: This gorgeous Eastern Box Turtle was seen hanging out in the meadow near marker Gold 71.

Keep your eyes peeled and drive carefully!

What an incredible night under the Blue Moon!

We had an amazing turnout for our night hike, with 49 eager hikers and 7 of our fantastic volunteer staff members (shoutout to the team in green vests) ready to conquer the trails.

To keep things moving, we split up into two legendary groups—the Rabbits and the Turtles and headed out into the darkness for a memorable ~2-mile trek.

Hiking at night opens up a whole different world! While we walked, the forest came alive with sound. Our groups were treated to a full-on nighttime concert, hearing:

• The boom, boom, boom calls of pileated woodpeckers
• (not so) Distant coyotes howling
• The deep hoots of great horned owls
• And even a surprise guest appearance from a neighbor's peacock!

Mother Nature definitely wanted to make us work for it. We had to battle a blanket of stubborn clouds and a late-rising moon, making the trail extra dark.

But perseverance paid off! Just as we reached the top of the park, the clouds parted, the moon broke through, and we got a spectacular view of the Blue Moon.

Huge thanks to everyone who came out, brought their high energy, and made it such a fun night. We couldn't have asked for a better crowd to share the trails with!

Until the next full moon... happy hiking!

HUGE EXCITEMENT for tomorrow night!

We just got back from our reconnaissance hike to prep for the big "Once in a Blue Moon" event Saturday, and we couldn’t resist sharing this shot. Would you believe this was taken with just a handheld mobile phone at 9:00 PM tonight? The sky is absolutely putting on a show for us!

Note on Availability: We are officially fully booked for tomorrow night’s guided hike! While we’d love to have everyone join us on the trail, we simply can’t fit any more explorers this time around.

Don’t worry—you don’t need to be on the McKaig trails to see the main attraction! Tomorrow night at 9:00 PM, step outside, head to your backyard or a clear patch of sky, and look toward the Southeast. You won't be able to miss it!

Despite the name, the moon won't actually be turning a shade of navy or azure, a "Blue Moon" is the second Full Moon in a single calendar month. They happen roughly every 2.7 years. This is where we get the phrase "Once in a Blue Moon"—it’s rare enough to be special, but frequent enough to keep us looking up!

Happy Moon-gazing, everyone! Post your own photos in the comments tomorrow night!

Cadet Trail UPDATE!

You may have encountered a roadblock if you tried to access the Cadet Trail earlier today. Last night's storm caused a large sycamore branch to snap and crash down, taking out some witchhazel trees and snagging a nearby cherry tree branch on the way down. This tangle blocked the trail right near marker White 25.

However, we are happy to report that the McKaig's Park Ranger didn't let the bad weather stop him! This evening, in the rain, he worked hard to clear all the branches. The trail is now open again!

We are so grateful for our Ranger’s dedication. Be sure to thank him in the comments below for his hard work and for keeping our trails safe, even in the rain!
