It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ex-Chief William Henry Butler “Butts,” a lifelong member of Packanack Lake Fire Company #5, who passed peacefully on Christmas Day at the age of 95.

Born and raised in Paterson, NJ, Bill made Packanack Lake his home in 1960 and joined Company #5 on February 11, 1963. Over 61 years of dedicated service, Bill rose through the ranks to serve many years as Assistant Chief and Chief, leading with integrity, discipline, and an unwavering commitment.

Even into his late 80s, Bill remained an active presence at the firehouse, supporting operations, handling paperwork, and always ready with a cup of coffee and conversation. He was not only a firefighter and officer, but a mentor, friend, and steady presence whose impact shaped our company and the generations who followed.

Bill’s legacy is woven into the fabric of Company #5. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the entire Packanack Lake community.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 3, 2026, at VanderMay Funeral Home. Visitation is from 12:00–3:00 PM, followed by services and a procession around Packanack Lake at approximately 4:30 PM.

Rest easy, Chief. Thank you for a lifetime of service.

Last week, the FD was called for the rescue of a person whose car collapsed into a sinkhole on a flooded street due to a water main break.

The driver reportedly disregarded the closed street signs and attempted to drive through the flooded roadway when the ground opened up.

Without knowing the potential extent of the underground sinkhole, this situation was treated with extreme caution and care.

Squad 5, Boat 5 and Rescue 5 responded to the scene along with companies 1 & 2. Truck 2 was brought in to use the ladder as the primary means of retrieving the victim, keeping unnecessary weight and personnel away from the edges of the hole.

Squad 5 provided two water rescue technicians in dry suits, each tethered by rope to a rescue tender as a safety precaution for both the victim and rescuers should the ground situation further deteriorate rapidly.

The victim was successfully removed by Truck 2’s crew into the bucket of the tower ladder. It was later learned that the cause of the sinkhole was a broken water main measuring 8 feet in diameter causing significant underground erosion.

This was an excellent example of teamwork and situational awareness by first responders to a scene that appeared deceptively less dangerous than it was or could have become.

A gentleman saved on Christmas morning by firefighters stopped by our firehouse to meet his rescuers and say thank you.

On Christmas morning, Firefighters were summoned to Pines Lake for a gentleman who fell through the ice while cross country skiing.

Squad 5, our specially outfitted water and ice rescue truck, arrived on scene and deployed a rescuer to retrieve the partially submerged victim who was hypothermic and losing cognitive function.

The victim was about 100 yards from shore and the ice was very thin. The rescuer was breaking through the ice constantly as he advanced with the sled. It took approximately 8 minutes from the time trained rescuers and specialized equipment arrived on scene to the time the victim was extracted onto a sled and pulled to shore.

Once out of the water his care was turned over to the First Aid Squad and transported to the hospital.

Squad 5’s crew was backed up by another rescuer on a sled from Wayne Fire Co #3, and supported by various other FD, EMS and Police personnel on shore.

A few days later, the gentleman who fell through the ice, stopped by Packanack Lake Fire Co #5 where he was able to meet face to face with Lt. Mike Leonard, the rescuer who first made contact and pulled him from the water (left), firefighter Matt Bartlett, who was the rescue tender on Squad 5 (right) and other members of the fire company who played a crucial role in the success of the operation.

They were able to hear the recounted story of how the gentleman ended up in his predicament. It was by shear happenstance that he decided to put a life jacket on that morning as he set out on the lake. The life jacket was a big factor in helping keep the victim from completely submerging as the cold water took its toll.

That visit was a special end of the year treat for the first responders. For whatever reason, it is not common for emergency personnel to meet those they have helped or saved. This encounter, and the chance to hear the gentleman’s story first hand, was a reinforcement as to why on Christmas morning, so many volunteers left their families in a split second, to go ensure another can continue to enjoy future holidays with their family.

On Monday, companies 3, 4 & 5 were dispatched to a working structure fire with reports of explosions at the maintenance garage of the Preakness Hills Country Club on Ratzer Road. Units arrived to a fully involved garage housing multiple accelerants with heavy fire affecting a large adjacent fuel tank and shipping container full of fertilizer and other hazardous materials.

Engines 3-2, 4-1 and 5-1 stretched multiple lines as additional units supplied manpower to quickly contain the fire, cool the adjacent fuel tank and prevent any extension to the hazardous exposures. provided rehabilitation and monitored vitals for firefighters working at the scene.

On Christmas morning, Squad 5 and Rescue 5 responded to Pines Lake for a cross-country skier who had fallen through the ice. The victim was approximately 100 yards from shore and holding onto the edge of the broken ice.

Squad 5, our specialized water rescue unit, arrived on scene and immediately deployed our ice rescue sled with one rescuer in an insulated dry suit. Rescue 5 and fire companies 3 & 4 arrived shortly after providing additional manpower and rescuers outfitted in dry gear.

When the rescuer reached the victim, he was pulled out of the water and onto the sled. Units on land then used ropes tethered to the sled to pull them back to shore. The victim was quickly loaded into an ambulance and transported to the hospital.

We train extensively in ice rescue, especially since Wayne Township has multiple large bodies of water including lakes, reservoirs and rivers. This was an excellent example of our training and teamwork by all fire, EMS and police personnel directly affecting a positive outcome for a very dangerous situation. Great job by all!
