Cleaning out the garage, basement or shed? Before you toss it, take a second look.

Oil-based paints, pesticides, solvents, gasoline, propane tanks, fluorescent bulbs—and certain batteries—need special handling and shouldn't simply go in your household trash.
Waynesboro's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day gives residents a safe way to dispose of these materials.

One item we're paying particular attention to this year: batteries. 🔋Lithium-ion and rechargeable batteries are found in everyday items such as cell phones, laptops, power tools, cameras, toys and other rechargeable devices. When these batteries are placed in household trash, they can be damaged or crushed during collection and create a fire risk for our employees, equipment and community.

The simple rule: rechargeable and lithium-ion batteries don't belong in your trash.

Bring them to Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day along with other accepted household hazardous materials.

Check the attached flyer for the full list of what will—and will not—be accepted. No trailers will be accepted this year.

Planning to travel on Hopeman Parkway this Saturday? Please allow a little extra time.
🚧 Saturday, August 15 | Approximately 11 a.m.–1 p.m.
Traffic on the Hopeman Parkway Bridge will be temporarily stopped for scheduled truck crossings. Each crossing is expected to cause a brief delay of approximately 10 minutes.
Drivers should:
• Allow a little extra travel time
• Use caution approaching the bridge
• Follow directions from traffic control personnel
The bridge will remain open, but motorists may experience brief delays during the scheduled crossings.

Before you dig, contact Virginia 811 to have underground utilities marked. Whether you're planting a tree, installing a mailbox, building a fence, or starting a larger project, contacting 811 is a free step that helps prevent injuries, service outages, and costly repairs.

Remember to:
✔ Contact Virginia 811 at least three working days before digging.
✔ Wait until utilities have been marked.
✔ Respect the utility markings.
✔ Dig carefully around marked utilities.
✔ If you're hiring a contractor, confirm they have contacted Virginia 811 before work begins.

🔥 Lithium Batteries Don’t Belong in the Trash
Today, Waynesboro refuse crews experienced another trash truck fire caused by an improperly discarded lithium battery. This was the third battery-related trash truck fire this summer.
During today's incident, the crew had to dump the truck's load onto the roadway to prevent the fire from spreading and potentially damaging the truck. Thankfully, our employees acted quickly, and no one was injured.
⚠️ Please never place lithium-ion or rechargeable batteries in your household trash.
When batteries are crushed inside a collection truck, they can ignite and cause dangerous fires that put our employees, collection vehicles, and our community at risk.
Instead, please:
🔋 Take batteries to an approved battery recycling location.
🔋 Tape exposed battery terminals and store batteries separately in a cool, dry location until they can be recycled.
🔋 Bring them to the City's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, September 12, at 900 Essex Avenue.
Lithium-ion batteries are commonly found in:
• Cell phones
• Laptops
• Power tools
• Cameras
• Toys
• E-cigarettes
• Other rechargeable devices
Please help protect our refuse employees, collection vehicles, and our community by disposing of batteries properly.

City of Waynesboro water crews will be installing new water service in the 1300 block of East Main Street on Monday, July 27.
🚧 What to Expect
• A lane shift work zone will be in place.
• Traffic will remain open, but motorists should expect slower travel through the area.
• No road closure or detour is anticipated.
• The work is expected to be completed in one day, weather and field conditions permitting.
Please use caution when traveling through the work zone, follow all traffic control devices, and allow a few extra minutes for travel if needed.

Beginning at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Monday, July 27, Poplar Avenue at the railroad crossing will be closed to all traffic while a railroad contractor performs crossing improvements.
The closure is expected to last 24 to 48 hours and will remain in place until the work is complete.
A detour will be in place. Please allow extra travel time and follow posted traffic signs.

💧 Voluntary Water Conservation Requested
Virginia continues to experience worsening drought conditions, and Governor Abigail Spanberger is encouraging all Virginians to voluntarily conserve water to help protect our shared water resources.
While mandatory restrictions are not currently in effect for our area, taking simple steps now can help reduce demand and preserve water supplies if dry conditions continue.
Here are a few easy ways you can help:
🚿 Take shorter showers and turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth or shaving.
🚰 Fix leaking faucets, toilets, and outdoor spigots.
🌱 Water lawns and gardens only when necessary, and water during the early morning or evening to reduce evaporation.
🚗 Delay washing vehicles or use a bucket instead of a continuously running hose.
🧹 Sweep driveways, sidewalks, and patios instead of washing them with water.
🧺 Run dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads.
🌼 Add mulch around plants to help retain moisture and reduce watering needs.

🚗 Last vehicle entry: 2:45 p.m.
🚪 Gate closes promptly at 3:00 p.m.
Please arrive early enough to unload and exit before the gate closes.
