🐾🚒 D Shift to the rescue! 🚒🐾

Today, our D Shift crew answered a different kind of emergency call — rescuing several tiny kittens trapped inside a storm water drain. Thanks to the team’s patience, teamwork, and determination, every kitten was safely brought to the surface and is now out of harm’s way. ❤️

We’re proud of our firefighters for always stepping up to help, whether it’s people or our four-legged friends. Great job, D Shift!

💚Mayday Alert for FF Rohe & family 💚

North Carolina’s Firefighter Dustin Rohe joined French Broad Volunteer Fire Rescue in 2023, after previously serving as a volunteer in Pennsylvania and in Madison County, North Carolina. He is a devoted fiancé and father of three. In 2025, he attended the fire academy, where he earned his Firefighter and EMT certifications and secured a part-time position with FBFR during his training.

While in the academy, Dustin began experiencing pain he initially believed was related to a prior hernia surgery. After graduating, he accepted a full-time position with the Waynesville Fire Department and later joined FBFR full time in early April 2026. When the pain returned, he sought medical care and learned the condition was more serious. He is now scheduled for surgery on April 29, 2026, to remove two cysts believed to be cancer-related. With a projected recovery time of four to eight weeks and the possibility of additional treatment, Dustin and his family are facing significant medical expenses and financial strain. Let’s ease their burden and show them we’ve got their backs.

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.
