Once a month, different Town of Waynesville departments will get a visit from a very special guest-an adoptable dog from Haywood County Animal Services.

Today's visitor is Rubix. This handsome three-year old Catahoula Leopard Hound mix is the definition of a happy dog. Rubix is affectionate, playful, and always ready to lean in for love. Rubix just happens to be deaf, but don’t let that fool you — he’s just as smart, loving, and capable as any other dog.

If you’re looking for a lovable, snuggly, toy-loving best friend who will adore you with his whole heart, Rubix is ready to meet you! The Public Works staff adored him and said that anyone would be lucky to adopt Rubix! See for yourself...watch the video and help us find Rubix a new home! If you've already fallen in love, call Haywood County Animal Services at 828-456-5338 ext. 2.

🎨 Waynesville Public Art Trail Spotlight

"Mountain Lion" by Jim Eppler

📍 9 S. Main Street, Waynesville

This life-like bronze sculpture expertly captures the intensity and elusiveness of a cougar on the prowl, quietly stalking its prey and ready to pounce. Mountain lion, panther, catamount, puma, cougar — the Puma concolor goes by many names. In Appalachian dialect, they’re called “painters,” a local spin on panther.

Cougars were once native to our mountains, but were declared varmints in the 1800s. Settlers attempted to eradicate the predators. Coupled with habitat loss and deer overhunting, cougars no longer roam these hills — at least officially. Most mountaineers have a cougar sighting story up their sleeve.

Our cougar sculpture was generously donated by David Blevins, a previous Waynesville Public Art Commissioner, and his wife Nancy. It took a crew of eight Waynesville workers to harness the stout mountain lion to a backhoe, boulder and all, and wrangle it to its new post guarding town hall.

Take a walk along the Waynesville Public Art Trail and discover how this remarkable work transforms the timeless science of telling time into a work of public art. For more info, visit: https://waynesvillepublicart.org/

🛹 More than a skate park. A place to play, connect, and explore.

Waynesville Skate Park is one of our community's most unique recreation destinations—and it's surrounded by even more ways to enjoy the outdoors.

Spend the day skating, walking or biking along the Richland Creek Greenway, or challenge yourself on our 18-hole disc golf course.

As we continue implementing our Parks & Recreation Comprehensive Plan, we're also looking ahead. Future improvements may include amenities like additional shade, seating, water access, and other enhancements to make this area even more welcoming for visitors.

We're committed to creating parks and public spaces that grow with our community — one improvement at a time. 💚💛

From storm damage to a stronger future. ⚾

Hurricane Helene left Vance Street Park's softball field under water and in need of major repairs. Today, the field has been rebuilt with significant upgrades and Waynesville Parks & Recreation isn't done yet.

New LED lighting and a new scoreboard are on the way, bringing us one step closer to welcoming adult league softball back to Vance Street this fall.
