💙 STABLE HOUSING CAN MEAN…

A stable home is more than four walls and a roof.

— It can mean a child has a quiet place to sleep and do homework.
— It can mean a parent doesn’t have to worry about where their family will sleep next month.
— It can mean an older adult can stay in the community they have called home for years.
— It can mean someone can keep their job because they have a reliable place to live.
— It can mean having enough money left over for groceries, medicine, transportation and other everyday needs.

When people have a safe and stable home, they have a stronger foundation to work, raise their families, stay healthy and plan for the future.

That is why affordable housing matters.

A home isn’t just a place to live. It is a place to build a life.

💗 THANK YOU, DOTTY — 1 Year Anniversary! 💗

Dorothy "Dotty" Madden is an In-Home Aide in our Haywood County Senior Resource Center Senior Services department and has been an employee with Mountain Projects for one year.

As an In-Home Aide, Dotty spends her days helping clients with chores they may have a harder time with as they age.

Dotty does more than help keep homes in order—she brings joy, companionship, and encouragement to our clients by providing essential socialization to those who may be homebound and lonely, which helps improve the quality of their lives.

Our senior services program aims to help clients remain living independently for as long as possible and caring employees like Renee play a tremendous part in helping our clients achieve that.

Thank you, Dotty, for all your kindness and dedication to our senior clients.

THANK YOU, DOLLY 🦋

Mountain Projects opened its doors in 1965, the same year that Dolly Parton, age 19, signed her first record contract.

Dolly’s many skills in music and acting made her a force of nature, a type of talent the world doesn’t create much any more, and of course, most western carolinians have followed her career. But over the years she became an equal force in the world of philanthropy. Her work to support education and literacy is famous, and her efforts in healthcare and medical research are renowned. There was much, much more than that.

During Dolly’s lifetime our organization has grown to be home to 140 employees operating 21 programs in the westernmost counties of North Carolina – primarily Haywood and Jackson. We may even have some of her cousins working on our team.

Of course we’ve been inspired by her connection and loyalty to these mountains and the people who live here. The branches of her legacy of altruism and kindness spread far and wide, but her roots remained anchored in the mountains that shaped her.

Nothing has made that clearer than her response in times of crisis. Through fires and floodwater, she stood steadily with the people of the mountains.

Thank you, Dolly, for your essence of generosity, kindness and strength.

🚌 CELEBRATING 4 YEARS — Avery Messer! 🎉

Please join us in congratulating Avery Messer on his 4-year anniversary with Mountain Projects!

Avery has become someone our team can count on wherever he is needed. Over the past four years, he has contributed to several programs that make a difference across our community—from helping distribute weekly food bags, to weatherizing homes so families can stay safe and comfortable, to supporting Food Services as meals reach people who need them.

Today, Avery is putting that same spirit of service to work as a Haywood Transit driver, helping connect people to the places and services they depend on. Pictured here with Transit Manager Christy Morrow, Avery continues to bring his willingness to help wherever the need arises.

What keeps Avery motivated is hearing from people about how Mountain Projects has helped make their lives better. Those stories are a reminder of why the work matters.

Thank you, Avery, for four years of flexibility, hard work, and service to our community. We appreciate all the ways you pitch in and help make a difference!

🏠 SECTION 8: MYTH VS. REALITY

Section 8 is often talked about, but it is not always understood.

MYTH: People on Section 8 don’t have to pay rent.
REALITY: Most households receiving Section 8 pay part of their rent based on their income. The program helps cover the remaining approved amount.
MYTH: Anyone can get Section 8.

REALITY: There are income and other eligibility requirements, and Mountain Projects often has a long waiting list because there are more people who need assistance than there are available vouchers.
MYTH: Section 8 means someone gets a free house.

REALITY: Section 8 is rental assistance. People still have to find housing that meets the program’s requirements, follow the rules of their lease and pay their share.

MYTH: People receiving Section 8 don’t want to work.
REALITY: People who receive housing assistance are individuals and families from all kinds of backgrounds. Some work, some are retired, some are living with disabilities and some are facing circumstances that make it difficult to earn enough to cover today’s housing costs.

Housing assistance is not about getting something for nothing.

It is about helping people afford a safe place to live when their income isn’t enough to cover the full cost of housing.

🐾 MEET CRICKET! 🐾

National Dog Month brings us another very special member of the Mountain Projects family! ❤️ Meet Cricket, the 7-year-old rescue pup who belongs to Brianna, daughter of Lorrie Ross, a Mountain Projects staff member and Preventionist with Mountain Strong.

Cricket was rescued from a shelter when she was just about 5 months old, and she has clearly found herself a wonderful forever family! 🐾❤️

Cricket also has a very special BFF — Munchkin the cat! 🐶🐱 These two don’t care one bit that they’re different species. They’re best friends, plain and simple! In one of these photos, they’re even holding paws, and honestly, it doesn’t get much sweeter than that. 🥹🐾

And then there’s Cricket’s opinion of her new boots. 👢😂 Brianna bought them to keep Cricket from tracking clay into the house, but Cricket’s expression seems to say, “I have reviewed this purchase… and I do not approve.” 😂

From a shelter pup to a beloved member of the family, Cricket is living her best life — with a kitty BFF, a loving family and apparently some very questionable footwear. ❤️

🐾 Happy National Dog Month, Cricket! We’re so happy you found your forever family!
