What is Haywood Pathways Center?

We are the only homeless shelter in Haywood County.

And with our friends at Hulbert Johnson Friendship House in Murphy, we are one of only two homeless shelters west of Asheville.

That means when someone in our region has nowhere else to go, there are very few doors available to them.

Haywood Pathways Center is more than a shelter.

We provide safe housing, meals, case management, recovery support, transportation assistance, and a community of people helping our neighbors move from crisis toward stability.

Right now, our family dorm is at full capacity, and our men’s dorm is nearing capacity.

The need is real. The pressure is real. And this work is only possible because the community chooses to support it.

What does your gift actually do?

At Haywood Pathways Center, every donation helps meet real needs for real people right here in our community.

$20 funds a one-on-one case management session, helping a resident take a step toward housing, employment, childcare, or recovery support.

$50 powers the entire campus for a day, helping keep the lights on across family housing, men’s and women’s dorms, the dining hall, laundry, and shared spaces.

$250 covers one Holy Cow Community Meal Service, bringing neighbors together over a warm meal and making sure anyone in need is fed with dignity.

$1,000 adopts a family dorm room for a full month, providing safe shelter, daily meals, and wraparound support while a family moves from crisis toward stable housing.

Meet Casey and her adopted Community Garden.

Casey came to Haywood Pathways Center directly from a treatment facility.

She is elderly, on a fixed income, and had reached a turning point in her life. With the support of peer support specialists and case managers at a local rehab facility, Casey found the strength to begin making real change.

That journey eventually led her here.

What started as a campus tour became something more. Casey moved into what is now her home at Haywood Pathways Center.

Today, Casey is thriving on campus — smiling, helping fellow residents, and caring for our community garden.

When asked what Pathways means to her, Casey said:

“Pathways has been comfort and accountability for me. When I come here, it makes me feel loved... I’d do anything for Pathways.”
Casey’s story reminds us that sometimes the only thing standing between someone and a new beginning is opportunity.

A safe place to land.

Meet Parker, our Director of Development and Partnerships.

“My role at Haywood Pathways Center is to help make sure the resources are there so our team can keep showing up for the people who need us.

Haywood Pathways Center now has three free meal options available each week for our community.

Every night at 6:30 PM, anyone in need can pick up a free to-go meal from our dining hall at Haywood Pathways Center.

On Wednesdays, Pathways To-Go brings warm meals to Fines Creek Community Center from 4:30pm-5:00pm

On Thursdays, Pathways To-Go brings warm meals to Cruso United Methodist Church from 4:30pm-5:00pm

These meals are free. No questions. No cost. Just food for neighbors who need it.

As the Holy Cow Food Truck gets a much-needed reset, we are continuing to make sure warm meals remain within reach across Haywood County — especially in remote communities where transportation and access can be difficult.

We have availability in our men’s dorm, women’s dorm, and family dorm.

Today is World Environment Day, and we are grateful for the ways our campus continues to grow.

At Haywood Pathways Center, our community garden is more than a garden. It is a place of nourishment, learning, peace, and connection. It reminds us that caring for our neighbors and caring for the land are deeply connected.

We have also loved working alongside our new friends at Hope Grows Community Garden, whose heart for growing food and building community has already been such an encouragement to us.

Gardens teach us something important: small seeds, cared for consistently, can become something that feeds many.

If you have ever wanted to start your own garden, Haywood County has wonderful local resources to help. Contact the Haywood County Cooperative Extension and ask about the Extension Master Gardener program or home gardening support.
