Haywood County Senior Resource Center

Haywood County Senior Resource Center There were only seven grantees nationwide. The grant led to the creation of Haywood Community Connections which evolved into the Senior Resource Center.

The mission of the Haywood County Senior Resource Center is to equip and empower older adults in Haywood County to live in their own homes as long as they wish, and are able to do so safely, by maximizing community resources and building collaborations. In November 2004, the Haywood Community Governing Council was awarded a $150,000 grant by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to develop a county-w

ide strategic plan. Subsequently, the Governing Council was awarded a $750,000 implementation grant from the Community Partnerships for Older Adults Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Its mission is “to provide services, learning opportunities and fun to seniors.”

We strive to:

*Create a system that is responsive to not only the needs but also the preferences of our vulnerable, at-risk, older citizens;
*Increase collaboration through partnership;
*Bring community members, businesses, and government entities together to bring positive changes to our county;
*Empower and equip community leaders to meet needs in their communities through the provision of resources, tools, and training;
*Create an awareness of services and programs currently available;
*Increase preparedness to address emerging needs and to capitalize upon opportunities to meet those needs;
*Assist the long term care and supportive services system in being more self-sufficient and less dependent on support from outside the community.

We've had a great couple of days here at the Haywood County Senior Resource center. This past Wednesday, we had Mary Ferrick, lead in Brain Fitness Drumming.
On Thursday, we had John Chicoine and many other speakers come and tell us about various resources available within the Haywood County community that are of benefit to Seniors. Included are some photos from both events.

THROWBACK THURSDAY — A Legacy of Caring

This , we’re looking back at a program that has been changing lives for decades.

In 1989, Mountain Projects launched the Foster Grandparent Program through a federal grant, creating opportunities for older adults to make a lasting difference in the lives of local children.

This photo from 1995 shows Foster Grandparent Alice Haley reading with students—a simple moment that reflects the heart of the program.

For more than 30 years, Foster Grandparents have provided one-on-one support, encouragement, and care to children in Head Start classrooms, child development centers, and schools throughout Haywood and Jackson counties.

Today, the Foster Grandparent Program continues that legacy through the Haywood County Senior Resource Center by connecting income-eligible adults age 60 and older with children who benefit from extra attention, guidance, and support.

Thank you to the many Foster Grandparents—past and present—whose kindness has helped generations of children learn, grow, and thrive. 💜

Thankful for Carla’s smiling face and devotion to local seniors!

🎉 Happy 4-Year Work Anniversary, Carla Woody! 💙

For four years, Carla has been a bright smile and steady source of support at the Haywood Senior Resource Center (HSRC).

As HSRC Manager Michelle Claytor shares, "Carla is a smiling face and leading star for our Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion volunteers. She helps keep those programs running steadily. Our resident kitchen organizer and tea party host, we are thankful to have her as part of the SRC team and thankful she shares her smiles and many talents with our team and our local seniors."

Thank you, Carla, for your kindness, dedication, and the many ways you make our seniors and team feel welcome. We appreciate all you do!

💙 Congratulations on four wonderful years!

Approximately 26 senior citizens participated in a 250th Fourth of July Celebration at the Haywood County Senior Resource Center. Ms. Carol Litchfield, representing the Haywood County Historical and Genealogy Society, delivered an insightful historical presentation. Her discussion focused on Haywood County's historical involvement and status within the 250th celebration, as well as the broader context of the American Revolution. Following the presentation, attendees enjoyed a luncheon consisting of pizza and salad, complemented by a special red, white, and blue berries and cream dessert. Subsequently, participants were transported via vans to the Museum of Haywood County in Clyde for an informative historical tour. The event was highly engaging and educational. We extend our gratitude to the exceptional docents who provided the tours. Happy July 4th and celebrate 250 years as a nation!
