Juneteenth is more than a day of remembrance. It is a celebration of the generations of Black Texans who transformed freedom into thriving communities, expanded opportunity, and pushed our state closer to its ideals.

From Reverend Jack Yates and the residents of Freedmen's Town to Barbara Jordan, Opal Lee, and countless others, the promise of freedom has been carried forward by people who refused to give up on a more just future.

Learning from the past. Building the future we deserve. Our work continues.

Five years ago, thanks to the advocacy of Opal Lee, Juneteenth became a federal holiday.

Today, we reflect on our nation’s journey toward freedom—and commit ourselves to the fight for true equality and justice for all.

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth — a powerful reminder of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free. Juneteenth stands as a testament to the strength, perseverance, and contributions of Black Americans throughout our nation’s history.

As we honor this day, let us recommit ourselves to protecting voting rights, advancing equity, and building a future where freedom and opportunity are accessible to all.
