Reems Creek Fire Department Providing Fire, Rescue and EMS (Paramedic) to the Reems Creek Fire District

08/19/2026

Fire crews responded to a reported bear attack at approximately 9:00 p.m. Tuesday in an area where our department provides fire protection services through a contract with the Asheville Fire Department.
Crews arrived on scene and used the apparatus siren in an attempt to scare away any bears in the area. No bears were seen by firefighters upon arrival, and crews were able to safely access the residence.
Buncombe County EMS also responded, evaluated the occupant, and transported the individual for further evaluation.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NC Wildlife) was notified and responded to the scene to assist with the reported bear encounter.
Based on information provided to responders, it appeared that a bear may have opened the exterior door and entered the residence. The occupant reportedly encountered the bear as it exited, with the bear possibly swatting at the occupant on its way out. The exact circumstances of the encounter were not directly witnessed by responding firefighters.
We remind residents in areas with active bear populations to use caution, secure potential food sources and other attractants, and keep doors and windows secured.
Please do not approach or attempt to interact with a bear.
