Weather Alert!

The system south of Louisiana has been upgraded to a 50% chance of development in the next 48hrs as it drifts WNW over the next few days. Regardless of whether it develops, this system is expected to bring an increased risk of heavy rain and flash flooding by Tuesday.

Isolated strong to severe storms are possible later this afternoon/evening in our northeastern counties/the Piney Woods. The main potential impact is damaging wind gusts. Be sure to remain weather aware!

There is a system in the Gulf. While the landing is uncertain at this time, it's important to take a few minutes to review your family's emergency plan, check your hurricane supply kit, make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, and know what to do if conditions change.

A little preparation today can make a big difference tomorrow. Continue to monitor updates from the National Weather Service, the National Hurricane Center, and your local emergency management officials as the forecast evolves.

Latest details on Tropical Depression Two. It is currently stationary in the eastern Gulf, but is expected to drift slowly northwestward then westward by midweek. Uncertainty remains in the track/intensity, so continue to follow updates from us and the National Hurricane Center.

🚒 Fire Service History Series | Why Are Fire Engines Red?

Have you ever wondered why most fire engines are red? The answer is actually more interesting than you might think.

While many people have heard the story that fire trucks were painted red because "red paint was the cheapest," historians say that's more myth than fact.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, many fire departments were volunteer organizations that took tremendous pride in their equipment. Fire engines were often polished to perfection, featuring bright red paint, gleaming brass, and hand-painted details that reflected the department's dedication and community pride.

As motorized fire apparatus became more common, red became the traditional color across much of the United States. It was bold, recognizable, and quickly became a symbol of the fire service itself.

Interestingly, not all fire departments use red today. You'll also find lime-yellow, white, black, and even blue apparatus. Research in the 1970s suggested that lime-yellow fire apparatus may be more visible in certain lighting conditions, leading some departments to change colors to improve safety.

No matter the color, every fire engine represents the same commitment: protecting lives, serving the community, and answering the call when help is needed.

A little preparation today can make a big difference when severe weather threatens our community.

Take a few minutes this week to:
✅ Make a family emergency plan.
✅ Build or restock your emergency kit with enough supplies for at least 3–7 days.
✅ Stay informed by monitoring trusted weather sources and enabling emergency alerts on your phone.

Don't wait until a storm is in the Gulf to gather supplies. Water, batteries, flashlights, medications, and fuel can disappear quickly as a storm approaches.
