🚧 Paving Season Update 🚧

We’re a little over halfway through our 2026 summer paving program with Pike Industries, and we’d like to thank everyone for your patience while work continues across Barre Town.

One thing we’d like to point out is that just because a road has turned fresh black doesn’t mean the project is finished.

Once the paving crew leaves, there’s still a lot of important work for our Public Works crews to complete, including:

• Rebuilding dirt driveway transitions with gravel so they tie in smoothly to the new pavement.
• Touching up paved driveway aprons that couldn’t be completed with the paver.
• Grading and shaping road shoulders.
• Cleaning and restoring drainage swales to ensure water flows properly.
• Final cleanup and other finishing details.

These finishing touches are just as important as the paving itself and help ensure the road performs well for years to come.

So if the paving contractor has moved on to another road, don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about you. Our crews are right behind them completing the final work that turns a freshly paved road into a finished project.

Thank you for your continued patience as we work through another busy construction season. Every road completed is another investment in Barre Town’s infrastructure, and we’re excited to keep the momentum going!

Websterville Water System Update | Boil Water Notice

As we approach 1:00 AM on Monday, July 20, 2026, Barre Town Public Works crews are still on site wrapping up repairs to today’s water main break. While water service was restored around midnight, a Boil Water Notice remains in effect for customers served by the Websterville Water System (PWS #5247).

Please note: The road will remain closed overnight as additional work is needed Monday morning to complete the repair and restore the roadway.

Today’s repair proved to be especially challenging. The water leak was first identified just before 4:00 PM on Sunday, July 19. An abandoned pipe in the ground allowed water to travel and surface in a different location than where the actual break occurred, causing crews to spend additional time locating the true source of the leak.

Once the break was found, crews discovered the damaged section of water main was located between ledge, making it extremely difficult to excavate, remove, and repair. The leaking water main was a 6-inch cast iron pipe installed prior to 1939, highlighting the challenges of maintaining aging infrastructure.

We sincerely appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while our crews worked through this complex repair. Additional updates will be provided as they become available, including when the Boil Water Notice has been lifted.

🚧 Paving is Underway in Barre Town! 🚧

You’ll be seeing our crews and contractors hard at work as this year’s paving program is underway. Fresh pavement means smoother roads for everyone, but it also comes with an important safety reminder.

Did you know that hot mix asphalt leaves the asphalt plant at approximately 320°F and is typically placed on the road at around 300°F? That’s hot enough to cause serious burns in just seconds.

While the surface may look ready to walk on, it can remain dangerously hot immediately after it’s placed. Please do not allow children, adults, or pets to walk, run, or cross newly paved asphalt, especially barefoot. Fresh asphalt can also stick to shoes, paws, bicycle tires, and other equipment before it has had time to cool and harden.

If you see paving operations in progress, please:

* Stay out of the active work zone.
* Follow all traffic control signs and flaggers.
* Keep children and pets well away from freshly placed pavement.
* Give the new asphalt time to cool before walking or driving on it unless directed otherwise by the paving crew.

Your patience and cooperation help keep everyone safe while we continue improving Barre Town’s roads. Thank you for helping us make this paving season a safe and successful one!

🚧 Holden Road is Open! 🚧

After nearly three years, we are pleased to announce that Holden Road is now open to traffic.

During the devastating July 10, 2023 flooding, approximately 1,000 feet of embankment along Holden Road was washed away, sending the hillside down to the river and making the road unsafe for travel. The damage required the road to be closed while a permanent solution was developed.

With funding assistance from FEMA and the expertise of our design consultant, VHB, a long-term repair plan was developed to restore the roadway safely and ensure its long-term stability.

This spring, J.A. McDonald, working with GSI, completed the project, which included:
• Installation of soil nails to stabilize the slope
• Shotcrete to reinforce the embankment
• Drainage improvements to protect the roadway for years to come

Projects like this require extensive engineering, environmental permitting, and coordination with multiple agencies before construction can even begin. While we understand road closures can be frustrating, these types of repairs simply cannot be completed overnight.

We sincerely thank the residents and everyone who travels Holden Road for your patience and understanding throughout the design, permitting, and construction process. Your cooperation allowed this important project to be completed safely.

We appreciate everyone’s support and are happy to welcome traffic back to Holden Road.

Yesterday paving season officially kicked off in Barre Town, and this year we’re investing in approximately 8 miles of roadway across our community.

While the paving itself is the most visible part of the process, the work behind the scenes starts long before the first truck arrives.

Each year, our team develops and updates a comprehensive 5 year paving plan, averaging 7.2 miles of roadway improvements annually. Every road is evaluated based on its condition, traffic, maintenance history, and overall lifecycle so we can prioritize projects that deliver the greatest value to our taxpayers.

One of the core principles of pavement management is simple: keep good roads good. Preserving roads that are still in fair to good condition through timely maintenance and resurfacing is significantly more cost effective than waiting until they fail and require full reconstruction. By making strategic investments today, we extend the life of our infrastructure, reduce long term costs, and provide safer, smoother roads for everyone who travels through Barre Town.

Infrastructure management is about more than fixing what’s broken. It’s about planning ahead, making data driven decisions, and being responsible stewards of public resources.

We’re excited to kick off another successful paving season and continue investing in the future of Barre Town.
