Earlier today, we shared a summary of the number and types of calls we’ve responded to in the month of April. Those numbers show the workload, but they don’t show the weight behind them.

In just four weeks, our department responded to four fatal incidents. For perspective, the average number of fatal fires per department in Vermont is less than 0.1 per year, and less than 0.12 nationally. Fatal motor vehicle accidents average around 0.2–0.3 per year in Vermont, and about 1.5 nationwide.

One of these calls is difficult. Four in a month… or two in a week, twice… is something that stays with you.

This isn’t about recognition. It’s a reminder. Life is short and can change in an instant. Treat people with respect. Be patient. Take care of one another.

We use Facebook as a tool for sharing information and keeping our community informed. We ask that it be used that way and leave your negativity at the door.

Because when the tones drop, it’s someone’s worst day—and it could be closer to home than you think.
