DATE: 16 April 2026
DATE OF RELEASE: 20 April 2026
PREPARED BY: Chief William Dodge

On 16 April 2026, Barre Town Police, assisted by Barre City Police, executed a residential search warrant in Barre Town. As a result, 2.3 grams of suspected Methamphetamine, 6.3 grams of suspected Crack Co***ne, 7.9 grams of suspected Hallucinogenic Mushrooms, several fi****ms, and evidence of suspected drug sales were located.

Based on the items located, William Bryant, 37 years of age, of Barre Town was taken into custody. Bryant was charged with Co***ne Sales, Methamphetamine Sales, Possession of Hallucinogenic Drugs, Possession of Fi****ms as a Prohibited Person, and Possession of Stolen Property. In addition, Bryant had an outstanding arrest warrant for a probation violation.

Bryant was arraigned the following day, where the Washington County State’s Attorney’s Office asked that he be held without bail. The court denied this request. A request was then made for $10,000 bail, which again was denied by the court. Bail was imposed at $1,000.00.

It should also be noted that Bryant was previously arrested on 30 March 2026 by Barre Town Police, and charged with Co***ne Possession, Resisting Arrest, Obstruction of Justice, and Violation of Court Ordered Conditions of Release.

I appreciate the work by the Washington County State’s Attorney’s office, specifically the assigned Deputy State’s Attorney, in their requests made to the Court. I also appreciate the work of the Barre Town Officers who put this warrant request together.

Please drive safely and make smart decisions this holiday season. We will be working with local agencies to make the roads a little safer.

Washington County Sheriff’s Department

Checkpoint Information Release

December 24th, 2025

On behalf of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Vermont State Highway Safety Office Governor’s Highway “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” Campaign, the Washington County Sheriff’s Department along with local & state law enforcement partners will be stepping up its Law Enforcement efforts throughout Washington County during this Holiday Period.

As of December 22nd, 2025 Vermont had 54 fatal crashes, resulting in 57 deaths on our highways. The impairment in these crashes were 22 DUI drug, 9 DUI alcohol & drug, and 2 DUI alcohol only. Of these crashes 8 also involved cannabis use.

Starting Friday, December 26th through Thursday January 1st Law Enforcement will be working extra hours conducting Saturation Patrols and Sobriety Checkpoints. These increased efforts by law enforcement during the holiday period are an attempt to make our roadway safe for all our motoring public.

Law enforcement asks for your assistance in these safety efforts. If you are going to be drinking or under the influence of drugs, DO NOT DRIVE. Plan for a safe way home. If you know someone has been drinking or using an impairing drug, do not let that person get behind the wheel. Take their keys and help them arrange a safe ride home. If you’re hosting a party where alcohol or other substances will be used, it is your job to make sure all guests leave with a sober driver. Plan ahead for sleeping arrangements or carpooling home with a sober driver.

We wish all our friends and neighbors a safe, fun, and festive holiday season. Be safe out there.
