Swimmers hoping for relief from the humidity by taking a dip at one popular Rhode Island beach were out of luck on Monday.

Advisory

7/22/18: DEM is closing East State Beach, Misquamicut State Beach, and Charlestown Breachway effective immediately because of dangerous surf conditions. Storm-generated riptide + swells (4’ to 6’) have made even knee-deep wading hazardous. The coming high tide is another factor. Beaches are expected to reopen Monday. Check back for updates.

Rip currents forecasted: Break the Grip of the Rip
Take 2 minutes to watch this video:
https://oceantoday.noaa.gov/ripcurrent/

We all love the beach in the summer. The sun, the sand, and the surf. But just because we're having fun, doesn't mean we can forget about safety.

Rip currents account for 80% of beach rescues, and can be dangerous or deadly if you don't know what to do.

Know before you go. Check local beach forecasts before you head to the beach, and always swim near lifeguards. Look for any warning signs or flags. If you're unsure about conditions, ask a lifeguard. And know how to swim before you venture in.

If you do happen to be caught in a rip current, stay calm. It won't pull you under - it'll just pull you away from shore. If you try to fight the rip current and swim against it, you'll just get worn out. Instead - float!

If you're a good swimmer, swim parallel to shore until you've cleared the pull of the rip current. Swim with the waves, allowing them to push you to shore.

If you can, wave and yell to get the attention of lifeguards and people on shore to let them know you need help.

If you're on shore and see someone in trouble in a rip current call for help! If a lifeguard is not available, throw in something that floats or extend a reaching object, but don't try to be a hero and make the rescue yourself. Even trained lifeguards only attempt a rescue using a flotation device.

Rip currents can be dangerous, but if you know your options, survey your situation, and stay calm, you can stay safe and continue to have fun in the surf, sand, and sun.

Dropping your garbage in our special place is not appreciated by anyone, especially not our ocean and marine life. 🛑 ✋ Stop littering!
We have our own local volunteers taking time out of their day to pick up garbage along our shoreline. They do not get paid to do this. Bring your trash home with you or bring it to a garbage can!
The Lookout Weekapaug will make public anyone who decides to dump their trash. If someone sends us a picture of a litterbug in action at The Lookout - We will post it up on the wall of shame with for all to see!

Please Do Not Leave your Garbage on the Beach or in Parking Lots! When you visit our shoreline please Respect our land, our marine life and our shores! Visitors are leaving piles of trash behind when they exit our beaches! Please Share

We love that you visit our Misquamicut beaches, but the last few days the trash being left and disrespectful folks have been overwhelming. Please respect our beach and treat it like your own. Misquamicut is not just the one state parking lot it is a three mile stretch from Pleasant View Inn all the way to Dunes Park. The whole area.
