Hoodland CERT Community Emergency Response Team

Hoodland CERT Community Emergency Response Team The Hoodland CERT is a Community Emergency Response Team as defined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Our 50-plus members are trained to support the Hoodland Fire Department and other emergency-services providers by providing first aid, evacuations, and search-and-rescue operations during emergency events such as floods, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, wildfires, and other natural and human-caused disasters. We have helped fill and place sandbags around homes during several floods since the Team

was formed in 1996. We encourage all members of the Hoodland communities to be prepared for disaster situations.

Folks, It's about 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 30.... Just returned from halping to fill sandbags and visiting Timberline Rim, where a maybe 200 bags helped hold water back from several homes. None of the homes was in danger, but much of the river bank in the area was washed away. If the river had risen a bit more, it might have been another story. Looks like the weather forcast is favorable: lots of snow in higher elevations today and tonight, showers tomorrow. No big rain events in the week ahead.

Watch Channel 2 news tonight for coverage. Reporter Melanie Wingo and a videographer visited the area.

Big thanks to all who helped today: Bob Reeves, Eldon Vandenburgh, John Pruden, Pat and Lora Buckely, Cliff Fortune and three of his sons, Randy & Debi Reischman, and John & Carrie Trax. Did I forget anyone? Let me know. I should have taken notes. Also thanks to the non-HEART folks who pitched in. Don Mench, for one.

FYI, river levels are falling after reaching a high of nearly 20,000 cubic feet per second (USGS gauge at Marmot -- see http://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=14137000). This is less than the ~24,000 CFS on January 26 and far less than the 64,000 CFS of the big 1964 flood.

Next meeting: January 9, 7 p.m., Hoodland Fire Station. Topics: Sandbagging -- filling, staging, sandbag wall placement/positioning, sandbag wall construction, etc. Bring your neighbors who may have an interest in this topic. Also, setting up a call-out list/phone tree.

See you there.
