Rashes to Research: Scientists and Parents Confront the 1964 Rubella Epidemic - Traveling Exhibit from the National Library of Medicine - Exhibit at MassBay Framingham Campus Room 302A, March 25 to April 5
This exhibit is free and open to the public. Come see the exhibit at our newly opened MassBay Center for Health Sciences, Early Childhood, and Human Services at 490 Franklin Street, Framingham, MA.
In 1964 thousands of children were born with serious disabilities related to rubella exposure during pregnancy. While the nationβs scientists rushed to create a vaccine and develop better screening tests, families faced difficult decisions about current and future pregnancies. This Exhibit highlights the work of researchers, parents, healthcare professionals, and educators to respond to rubella and its devastating life changing health consequences in the years before an effective vaccine nearly eliminated the disease from the United States.
This traveling exhibit is on loan from the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The NLM is the world's largest biomedical library and a national resource for health professionals, scientists, and the public, and is a part of the National Institute of Health (NIH).
**Memory Wall**
Thoughts of the rubella epidemic will remind us of the fear, confusion, and the determination of medical research we all experienced during the Covid pandemic. There will be a Memory Wall if you would like to leave a card in memory of a lost family member or friend. If you would like to leave a reflection on your experience during the pandemic, or if you have experiences related to rubella, we will collect them and curate them into a Reflective Zine for the MassBay Library.
