The Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support citizen warriors through a wide-range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if needed.

What kind of a day was it? A typical chilly but clear day in Monson as the public was invited to a free chili back off competition between the Monson Police Department and the Monson Fire Department.

There were several postings by both parties on social media; each accusing the other of fowl play. The fire department took credit for all the work they put in to make the day a positive event. They even acted as the Judge of the bakeoff supplying a member of the department as judge. This had nothing to do with the outcome but the fire department was declared the winner.

One of the other events people were able to view was the landing of a Blackhawk helicopter from the Army National Guard out of Barnes Airport. On board was Ssgt Shane Finnegan of Monson who along with the area chairman of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, Earl Bonett.

Finnegan and Bonett presented two Patriot Awards to Fire Chief Brian Harris one for himself and one for Asst. Fire Chief Jonathan Miller.

Finnegan, who is also a member of the Monson Fire Department had nominated both for the support given to him and all the men and women who serve.

The chief also signed a Statement of Support. This was viewed by over 100 people at the Veterans Field in Monson.

Last week, members of the Massachusetts National Guard and Massachusetts State Police took part in a training exercise for the Massachusetts Cyber Incident Response Team. The MA-CIRT is a joint team of the Mass Guard and the Mass State Police that the governor would activate in response to a cyberattack on critical infrastructure, a local municipality, or a school.

During this training exercise, Soldiers, Airmen, and troopers ran through scenarios, refined their operating and reporting procedures, and continued to build the foundation of partnership so we are ready to respond to any cyber threat.

Cyberspace threats grow and change exponentially, and partnerships are critical to our success in and through cyberspace.
