Last week, we had the privilege of celebrating the 5th-grade students at Wellington Elementary as they completed the N.O.V.A Program, a 13-week curriculum focused on Nurturing, Opportunity, Values, and Accountability. Throughout the program, students learned how to make positive choices, build strong character, and understand the impact of their decisions as they grow.

One of the highlights is the NOVA Constitution, where each student reflects on what they’ve learned and how they plan to apply those lessons in their everyday lives. These essays are reviewed anonymously and scored on clarity, depth, and personal insight.

This year, two students (Sophia Bailey and Charlotte Ogilvie) stood out for their exceptional writing and understanding of NOVA principles. They were invited to read their NOVA Constitutions at graduation and were honored with the Chief’s Award of Excellence for essays that demonstrated both strong academic understanding and a deep connection to the heart of the NOVA program.

As an agency, we believe that investing in our youth is one of the most important commitments we can make. We also want to recognize the C.A.R.E Coalition, whose support made it possible for our department to bring NOVA to Wellington Elementary.

We are incredibly proud of every student who completed the program and grateful for the teachers, families, and community members who support NOVA each year. These kids are the future of our community, and they continue to show us just how bright that future is.

Congratulations to all our NOVA graduates at Wellington Elementary!

Wellington City Police Department
COMMUNITY NOTICE

New Utah laws regarding e-bikes and electric scooters are in effect.

What you need to know:

As of May 6th Riders under 21 years old must wear a helmet when operating an e-bike or electric scooter.
A citation can be issued not only to the rider, but also to a parent or responsible adult who allows a minor to ride without a helmet.

This update is focused on safety. E-bikes and scooters are becoming more common, and many can reach speeds that increase the risk of serious injury. Wearing a helmet is one of the simplest ways to prevent that.

We encourage all parents and guardians to take a moment to talk with their kids and make sure they have a properly fitted helmet, and that they’re wearing it every time they ride.

*The required e-bike certificate from the state of Utah is not yet available, and that portion of the law will not take effect until January 27, 2027.
At this time, WCPD will be enforcing helmet requirements.

Let’s work together to keep our community safe.

Excellent work by Agents Larsen and Parker. We appreciate your quick action and commitment to keeping our community safe.

Unexpected call. Immediate action.

Today, while conducting routine field visits, two of our AP&P agents, Nick Parker and Kelten Larsen, jumped into action after hearing an emergency dispatch call in Carbon County.

They arrived first on scene and found two unresponsive men in their 30s, along with two cats and a dog in distress due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Putting themselves at risk, Agents Parker and Larsen pulled both men and all three animals to safety before medical crews arrived.

The men credit our agents with saving their lives.

⚠️⚠️ SCAM ALERT ⚠️⚠️
Fake "Mandatory Collection" Notices

Utahns are reporting a new, aggressive scam involving fake "Court-Ordered" documents. These notices claim your traffic account is "delinquent" and threaten immediate license suspension.

The "Red Flags" in this image:

🚩 Fake Agency: It lists the "Department of Safety & Homeland Security." This department does not exist in Utah.

🚩 High Pressure: It uses words like "Irrevocable," "Non-Negotiable," and "Mandatory" to cause panic.

🚩 Extreme Threats: DPS does not collect fines for traffic violations, and real communication would always come from the courts.

What you should do: DPS is already tracking this surge. The best way you can help is to simply delete the notice and tell others about the scam.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out with support as I step into the role of Chief of Police. I truly appreciate the confidence that’s been extended during this transition. Wellington is a community worth protecting and investing in, and I’m committed to leading with integrity, transparency, and respect.

I look forward to working side‑by‑side with our officers, city partners, and residents as we continue building a department our community can be proud of. I’m also grateful for the support and partnership of the surrounding agencies who stand with us and strengthen the work we do every day. Today, Wellington Elementary conducted a scheduled lockdown drill.

The drill went smoothly, and it is no longer active. These trainings are an important part of ensuring our students and staff know exactly what to do in the event of an emergency. Preparation and practice build confidence and safety.

Great job to Carbon School District and the staff at Wellington Elementary for taking proactive steps to protect our kids and for handling the drill professionally and efficiently. Thank you Carbon County Sheriff's Office Utah, Price City Police Department, & Utah Department of Corrections, Adult Probation & Parole for participating.

The safety of our children will always be a top priority.

With the retirement of Chief Tom Kosmack, the Wellington Police Department enters a new chapter of leadership. We are proud to introduce Kevin Saccomano as Chief Pro-Tem.

Kevin has served in local law enforcement for many years, bringing a depth of experience and a steady, proven approach to public safety. He began his career with the Wellington Police Department in mid-2021 and, through hard work, professionalism, and dedication, quickly earned a promotion to Sergeant, a testament to both his leadership and the trust placed in him.

Kevin is a respected leader known for his strong attention to detail, a clear talent for thorough and effective report writing, and a people-first philosophy. He views people as people, not cases, and consistently approaches situations with fairness, professionalism, and respect.

He is also deeply committed to community service and mental health awareness, understanding that modern policing requires compassion, communication, and thoughtful responses especially during times of crisis.

As Chief Pro-Tem, Kevin Saccomano brings experience, integrity, and a calm, principled leadership style to the Wellington Police Department. The community is well served by his dedication, and we are confident in his ability to lead.
