City of Wells The City of Wells, founded in 1869, is the governing body for Wells, MN, a south central Minnesota city with a population of 2,343 and 1,013 households.

The City of Wells provides a full-time police department, volunteer fire department and ambulance, a community pool, a public library, a municipal liquor store, a municipal golf course and a municipally-owned theatre, called the Flame Theatre. The City employs 15 full time employees and about 35 part time employees. The Wells City Council meets the second and fourth Mondays at 5 pm at the Wells Co

Major employers in Wells are Wells Concrete Products, Central Farm Service Co., Parkview Care Center, Cemstone, ISD No. 2134: United South Central, Herman Manufacturing and Wells Federal Bank. Wells is also home to the former Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Depot and Lunchroom, built in 1903, and on the National Register of Historic Places and the Muret N. Leland House, built in 1886, and on the Minnesota Historic Properties List.

🚧 Highway 22/109 Construction Update – Wells as of 9-1-26🚧

Here’s the latest on the Highway 22/109 project from MnDOT:

🔹 Sanitary sewer work is underway along Highway 109. Residents are reminded not to drive or park on the red bypass hose, as it is a critical part of the sanitary sewer system. Please also watch for temporary water supply lines in the construction area.

🔹 Crews will continue removing spoil piles and extra sub-grade material near 6th Avenue.

⚠️ Upcoming Highway 22 Closure: Highway 22 is scheduled to close Tuesday, September 8 for railroad crossing repair work. Local residents will be able to use alternate routes, including 2nd Street NW and W. Franklin Street. The map included with this post shows the closure area highlighted in orange.

🚗 Local access across Highway 109 at 3rd Avenue will continue to be maintained until further notice.

🗑️ Garbage & Recycling Reminder: If you are within the construction area, please label the top of your bin with your house number and place it at the end of your driveway. The contractor will move bins to an accessible pickup location and return them afterward.

🚧 Highway 109 Construction – Resident Access Update 🚧

As work continues on the Highway 109 project, residents should be aware of upcoming construction and temporary access changes in the area.

Crews will be working on 6th Avenue from Highway 109 to 2nd Street NW, including the intersection of Highway 109 and 6th Avenue. Residents living on 6th Avenue will continue to have access to and from their homes each day and evening whenever possible.

Construction will also continue east along Highway 109 toward Highway 22. Crews will make every effort to keep intersections open for traffic; however, individual intersections may need to temporarily close during the day while utility or grading work is taking place.

🏠 For residents along the construction area: You may notice red sanitary sewer pipe crossing driveways with gravel placed over it. The gravel creates a temporary ramp that protects the pipe while still allowing access to your residence.

Please review the attached notice and map for the current traffic and construction configuration. Thank you for your continued patience as this project progresses!

🚧 Highway 22/109 Wells Construction Update – August 25 🚧

Work continues to progress on the Highway 22/109 project:

🔹 The pipe crew is finishing storm sewer work on 6th Ave and will begin progressing east along Highway 109.
🔹 The grading crew has milled and removed curb and gutter on 6th Ave and is working on spoil removal and grading.

🚗 Traffic & Access Reminders:
• Local access across Highway 109 at 3rd Ave will remain open until further notice.
• Highway 22 remains open to local traffic at this time. Railroad crossing repairs on Highway 22 are planned for later this year and will require a temporary full closure. More information will be shared once the schedule is finalized.

🗑️ Garbage & Recycling: Residents in the construction area should label the top of their bins with their house number and place them at the end of the driveway. The contractor will move bins to an accessible pickup location and return them afterward.

🚧 Highway 22/109 Construction – Resident Access Update 🚧

As Stage 1, Phase 2 construction continues, resident access will be maintained at 3rd Avenue/Highway 109 for residents needing to cross the construction area.

This crossing will remain available until construction activities progress enough to transition the temporary resident crossing to 6th Avenue.

Please continue to use caution in the construction area, follow all posted signage, and watch for changing traffic patterns. We will share additional updates as access points change.

🚧 Highway 22/109 Wells Construction Update – August 18 🚧

Here’s the latest on the TH 22/109 construction project in Wells from MNDOT:

🔹 Work currently underway:

Pipe crews continue working in Stage 1, Phase 2.
Grading crews are placing topsoil for turf establishment east of Halfmoon Road.
Sod and hydroseeding work is underway.
Rosehill Cemetery is accessible from all entrances on TH 109.

🔹 Upcoming/Traffic Updates:

Local access from the west end of TH 109 to Halfmoon Road was expected to be available by the end of the day on August 19.
TH 22 and 3rd Avenue will remain open to local traffic for the time being. Milling operations in these areas will take place at a later date.

🗑️ Garbage & Recycling Reminder:
Residents in the construction area should label the top of their garbage and recycling bins with their house number and place them at the end of the driveway. The contractor will move bins to an accessible pickup location and return them afterward.

🚧 Highway 22/109 Wells Construction Update 🚧

Here’s the latest on the Highway 22/109 construction project in Wells:

👷 Work in Progress:
• Pipe crews continue working in Stage 1, Phase 2.
• Grading crews are placing topsoil for turf establishment.
• The paving crew has placed two lifts of bituminous pavement, with the remaining three lifts to be completed at a later date.
• Access to Rosehill Cemetery has been reestablished at the Halfmoon Road crossing.

🚗 Upcoming Detour Change:
A detour change is anticipated at the end of this week, weather permitting. Local access will be available from the west end of Highway 109 to Halfmoon Road.

Highway 22 and 3rd Avenue will have milling completed at a later date. For now, these roadways will remain open to local traffic.

🗑️ Garbage & Recycling Reminder:
Residents within the construction area should label the top of their garbage and recycling bins with their house number and place them at the end of their driveway. The contractor will move bins to an accessible location for pickup and return them afterward.

🚧 HIGHWAY 22 RESURFACING PROJECT BEGINS AUGUST 17 🚧

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is expected to begin a resurfacing project on Highway 22 from Wells south to the Iowa border on Monday, August 17, weather permitting.

The project will include a micro mill and overlay to help extend the life of the highway and provide a smoother, safer driving surface.

🚗 What motorists should know:

No detour will be required — Highway 22 will remain open to traffic during construction.
A flagging operation and pilot car will be used to guide motorists through the work zone.
Please allow extra travel time when traveling this stretch of Highway 22.
Slow down, stay alert, and watch for workers and heavy equipment.

Construction is expected to continue through mid-October, weather permitting. Construction schedules and traffic impacts are subject to change.

Ulland Brothers, Inc. was awarded the project with a bid of approximately $3.28 million.

Please use extra caution when traveling through the work zone and help keep our roadway crews safe! 👷‍♂️🚧

🚧 Chip Sealing Notice 🚧

Pearson Bros. Contracting is scheduled to begin chip sealing the highlighted streets on the attached map tomorrow, August 11th. If it rains, the work will be completed Wednesday instead.

To help the project go smoothly, please do not park on the highlighted streets during the chip sealing process. Temporary No Parking signs should have been posted today along the streets scheduled for work tomorrow.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as these important street maintenance improvements are completed. We appreciate everyone’s help in keeping the work area clear and safe!
