Taking Career Exploration to the Road!
USC 11th and 12th grade students had a wonderful opportunity to visit the Highway 109 and Highway 22 road construction project in Wells and see firsthand what it takes to build and improve our local infrastructure!
Employees from MnDOT, Bolton & Menk, and Ulland Brothers did an outstanding job explaining the why and how behind road construction. Students got to see different stages of the project and learn about all the moving pieces, planning, teamwork, and coordination required to complete a project of this size.
Beyond the construction itself, students heard directly from industry professionals about their education, work experience, and the career paths that led them to where they are today. They also shared what they enjoy most about their jobs, along with some of the challenges and less enjoyable aspects of their work.
This is what workforce development looks like! Connecting students with professionals and real-world projects helps them explore career opportunities, understand the skills and education needed for different jobs, and discover possibilities they may not have considered before.
Experiences like this help bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace while building awareness of the career opportunities that support our local communities and economy.
