"Strive to be a better person." As First Responders, the public in general looks up to us. We need to uphold their image of us by taking care in how they perceive our actions, our words and how we treat others. It is becoming so easy for some to excuse their own behavior and blame others for the hurt he or she is feeling. For instance “asking to be excused for what you’ve done because you didn’t intend to hurt someone.”
Truth is if people in relationships gave any thought of the other person they would have to behave less self-serving. If they can just pretend that they really didn’t know what was going to happen, they might never have to admit that they just didn’t care enough to stop their own behavior.
If they could be honest admitting that they chose to put their own needs above those of the other, that authentic accountability, could allow the person wronged to not just be expected to forgive you because you “didn’t mean to hurt them.” Fact is it really doesn’t matter if you didn’t mean to, you did hurt them. You’re accountable for the pain you’ve caused whether you intended to or not. The hurt is real and your lack of caring simply magnifies it.

Lesson: Setting high standards 101.
We in the fire service, but especially those of us serving as Fire Police Officers are often looked upon by the public as hero figures. The knights that show up when tragedy strikes, be it a building fire, motor vehicle accident or even a natural disaster. The story I'm posting below is from a retired PSP Trooper. He has used it to have Troopers understand that when they present themselves to the public, they need to always strive to be on best behavior. Well, I hope you enjoy Henry's short story.😀

~The changing traffic signal~
The light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing and stopped at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection.

The tailgating woman behind him was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration, as she missed her chance to get through the intersection.

As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed and placed in a holding cell.

After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.

He said, "I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, giving the guy in front of you the finger and cursing at him. I noticed the 'What Would Jesus Do' bumper sticker, the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'Follow Me to Sunday-School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk, so naturally I assumed you had stolen the car."
