Uh-oh. On Inauguration Day this was $2.99.9. Yesterday it was $3.19.9. A week earlier it was like $2.50-something. Trump drove this up almost a dollar in a week.

Now normally gas prices aren't really the President's fault, whether that's Trump or Biden or Obama. However, this time it is Trump’s fault. He decided to start blowing up stuff in Iran and as a direct result of those actions oil prices immediately spiked. So, in this case, Trump is directly responsible.

For the first time in a while, gas at the Wellston Speedway is way down. It's $2.69.9 at the moment.

Before we start worshipping our golden Trump shrines, let's give this some context.

We've been here earlier in the year, when domestic oil production was actually down slightly since Trump took office. Prices aren't directly tied to our oil production. In fact, oil is a global market and prices rise and fall on a global scale, regardless of where the oil comes from. Additionally, the cost difference between imported and domestic oil is around $0.10 a gallon, and 70% of our oil usage was already American, so imported oil was adding $0.03 on the gallon. This means it's impossible for "drill baby drill" to do more than a few pennies' difference.

Further, it's not like US domestic oil production was in decline and Trump saved it. It was actually in decline from the end of 1985 until around the election of Obama. Since Obama took office, aside from temporary dips, we've trended upwards for almost two decades, including under Obama and Biden. We're simply continuing that trend.

Here's a look at gas prices and production. Oil production in the US is finally clearly up, after a slump earlier this year. Before anyone praises Trump for it, it's really just a continuation of a general upward trend. There's only been two noteworthy drops in oil production, one during Obama, who simultaneously oversaw the largest increase to date, and the biggest and most dramatic drop being under Trump’s first term. In fairness and honesty, that huge drop coincided with the pandemic.

We don't like dishonest spin here, but do love context.

We're back to $3.29.9, up thirty cents from Inauguration Day. In fairness, because we're honest, last night it was $3.03.9, which was only four cents up from Inauguration Day, but I failed to get it posted. I'm busy with so many projects.

Domestic oil production is finally up to where it was last December. It's worth noting that production has trended upwards through the last handful of administrations, and the last noteworthy decline was under 45.
