New York lawmakers have passed bipartisan legislation that would quadruple the state income tax credit for eligible volunteer firefighters and EMTs/Medics from $200 to $800 per person, or double for married couples when both qualify. The proposal would also allow eligible volunteers to receive the state tax credit while benefiting from a locally authorized property tax exemption. Supporters say the increased incentive COULD help address recruitment and retention challenges facing volunteer fire and EMS agencies across New York. The bill has passed both chambers of the Legislature and now awaits action from Gov. Kathy Hochul.
