Statement Regarding Flock Safety License Plate Cameras
Wellsville, Kansas — To the residents of Wellsville:
I want to personally acknowledge and address the concerns that have been raised regarding the fixed Flock Safety license plate reader cameras located throughout our community.
I have listened carefully to the concerns and understand the importance of ensuring that our residents feel heard, and respected.
After careful consideration, I have made the decision to terminate all agreements between the City of Wellsville Police Department and Flock Safety. These agreements have been in place since October 2023. Moving forward, the cameras will be covered, and authorization for their use by staff will be removed.
I would also like to clarify some confusion regarding the number and locations of the Flock cameras in Wellsville.
At this time, the city has two Flock cameras located within the community: One camera is located on 1st Street, just west of Ash Street. The second camera was originally located on K-33, south of the TA Truck Stop. Due to the ongoing bridge construction, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) requested that the license plate reader be relocated. In response to that request, the camera was moved to 10th Street and Main Street in preparation for the anticipated detour route once construction begins. I understand that the Flock map may appear to show three cameras. However, the camera that was previously located on K-33 is no longer there. The mapping information is managed by Flock Safety and is not something the City of Wellsville can modify or control directly. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
I would also like to address questions regarding information about Flock Safety that has been shared on social media. Some residents have expressed concern about posts regarding these cameras being removed. The social media pages where those posts appeared are not owned, operated, or administered by the City of Wellsville. They are privately operated groups, and the administrators of those pages make their own decisions regarding posts and content based on the individual guidelines of their respective groups. I appreciate your willingness to speak up and your continued commitment to making Wellsville a strong and welcoming community.
