The Wenatchee Police Department is accepting applications for the Citizens Academy. This Academy fosters a community partnership and encourages community service through educating the community in the challenges of law enforcement and police policies and procedures.

The Academy is a free 15-week class for the public, held on Wednesday evenings from 6:00-8:30 P.M. August 12th through November 18th (the graduation ceremony will be on Wednesday the 18th). Wenatchee residents are provided with firsthand information about how the police department operates. Citizens are acquainted with law enforcement’s role in serving and protecting the community and exposed to the tasks police officers encounter in the daily performance of their duties.

Academy sessions are taught by police officers, department support personnel, and other criminal justice professionals. Weekly two and a half hour sessions cover a range of topics including information about specialty units, patrol procedures, community-oriented policing, domestic violence, s*x crimes, dispatch and records procedures, high-risk calls, use of force, career development, traffic enforcement and court procedures. The Citizen’s Academy is not intended to make Police Officers out of the public; however, those who attend will be provided opportunities to apply the new information in a practical setting (such as driving a police patrol car through a skills course).

This course also has a presentation on protecting children from s*xual predators.
Applicants must be 18 years of age. Application forms can be found visiting https://www.wenatcheewa.gov/government/police/employment/volunteer-opportunities/citizens-academy. The application can also be found in the WPD lobby. Please contact Detective Koch at (509) 888-4257 or [email protected].

Applications are due by July 31st.

The Academy instruction is presented in English and ends with a graduation ceremony with diplomas presented by the Wenatchee Police Department administration.

The Wenatchee Police Department is proud to announce the closure of a forty-year-old homicide investigation. We would like to recognize and thank all prior investigators for their dedication, perseverance, and commitment to this case over the past four decades.

This investigation spanned the country and extended into Canada. Without the assistance of the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Washington Attorney General’s Office, and numerous other assisting agencies, this case would not have been resolved.

As this case is closed, we would also like to thank the victim’s family for never giving up and for remaining determined in their pursuit of justice for their loved one. She would have been seventy-five years old.

Please see the attached press release for additional details regarding the investigation.

Shooting Investigation Press Release

On May 11, 2026 at approximately 1533 hours, Wenatchee Police Officers responded to a report of a male armed with a gun in the area of 1044 Fuller Street in Wenatchee. While enroute, the caller reported the male making statements similar to, “I can’t do it anymore” and that he wanted to harm himself. There were several callers on this incident who all reported the male was very upset and was possibly having a medical or mental health crisis.

There was an initial report a shot had been fired and possibly someone had been shot.

Wenatchee Police as well as Law Enforcement personnel from the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office and the East Wenatchee Police Department responded to the scene. A 19-year-old male was quickly pointed out to the arriving officers by witnesses. When contacted by the first arriving officers he was still armed but complied with commands and was taken into custody without incident.

There was a temporary road closure on Stevens Street between Linwood Ave and Monroe Street. The area was taped off so this incident could be properly investigated. Evidence was collected at the scene to include the firearm that was confirmed to have been fired into the air one time. No one was injured and the male was transported to Central Washington Hospital.

The identity of the male is not being released at this time as the criminal investigation and criminal charges are pending while he receives necessary treatment.

Thank you to the East Wenatchee Police Department and the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office for the rapid response and assistance.

No further press releases are expected at this time.

Detective Sergeant Eaton is the point of contact for this incident.
