Last week, during the Wenatchee City Council meeting, Chief Rick Johnson was officially sworn in as the City of Wenatchee’s new Chief of Police. Tomorrow, September 1st, he begins a unique new chapter in public safety leadership, serving as the shared Chief of Police for both the City of Wenatchee and City of East Wenatchee.

This partnership represents something our valley has long done well, working together to better serve our communities. While both police departments will remain completely independent and continue serving their respective cities, shared leadership creates another opportunity to strengthen communication, consistency, and collaboration throughout the Wenatchee Valley.

Chief Johnson brings a wealth of leadership experience and knowledge back to Wenatchee. After being promoted from the Wenatchee Police Department in 2016 to serve as Chief of Patrol with the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, he continued his leadership journey in 2020 when he was selected to serve as Chief of Police for the City of East Wenatchee.

The experience, perspective, and knowledge he has gained throughout his career will be an incredible asset to the City of Wenatchee and the Wenatchee Police Department.

We are excited to welcome that experience back to Wenatchee and know Chief Johnson will be a tremendous asset to our officers, City team, and community.

Why are we replacing the center turn lane in the North Wenatchee Avenue Corridor Improvements project?

The existing center turn lane creates multiple conflict points where vehicles attempt to turn left across oncoming traffic. On high-traffic corridors like North Wenatchee Avenue, this increases the likelihood of angle and rear-end collisions. Within the project area, nearly 300 collisions have occurred since 2013, with many linked to left-turn movements.

To improve safety and mobility, the project will replace the center turn lane with a raised median and route drivers to Maiden Lane and Horse Lake Road signalized intersections to safely complete a U-turn movement. In addition to these intersections, a new mid-block signal near Harbor Freight will also allow U-turn movements. This approach is based on proven safety strategies and offers several benefits:

✅Reduces collision risks
✅Improves pedestrian safety by shortening crossing distances
✅Maintains access to businesses
✅ Ensures access for emergency vehicles

Last week we announced and upcoming road closure on Douglas Street in front of the Wenatchee Library. The project was postpone 1 week. It will now kick off August 31.

Starting August 31 through September 10, Douglas Street will be closed to vehicle traffic directly in front of the library for ADA accessibility upgrades.

Here’s what you need to know before you visit:
• Vehicle Access: Vehicles will be rerouted to access the library parking lot via Palouse Street.
• Pedestrians & Library Access: The library remains open! Pedestrian routes to the building will stay fully open and accessible throughout construction.

This closure allows crews to install upgraded ADA connections leading from the library across the center island to Memorial Park. Thank you for your patience as we work to make our community spaces more accessible for everyone!

🇺🇸 Wenatchee is proud to welcome the 2026 Serving Those Who Served Conference, bringing together veterans resource providers, state agencies, and community partners from across Washington.

The conference focuses on strengthening collaboration, building connections, and sharing valuable knowledge in areas that impact veterans and their families, including employment, benefits, wellness, and the arts.

Mayor Poirier provided welcoming remarks, and later joined East Wenatchee Mayor Crawford to meet with agency leaders, keynote speakers, and attendees, and hear more about the programs and initiatives underway to support veterans both locally and throughout the state.

🏐 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! 🏆

Last night during City Council, the City of Wenatchee had the privilege of recognizing the North Central Washington Volleyball Club U18 Gold Champions for an incredible achievement!

This talented team traveled to Phoenix, Arizona in July, where they competed at the national level and came home as division National Champions!

What an amazing accomplishment and a tremendous reflection of the hard work, dedication, teamwork, and leadership of these athletes and their coaches. Reaching the national stage is impressive and winning a national title is extraordinary.

Congratulations to the NCW Volleyball Club U18 Gold team! Wenatchee is proud to celebrate you.

🌿 A Special Piece of Wenatchee Art Has a New Home🌿

Today was a wonderful celebration of art and community as the City of Wenatchee marked the return of the Labyrinth created by Ada Riley, now beautifully reconstructed at Chase Park.

Ada originally created the Labyrinth in 2008 on her 72nd birthday, carefully placing each brick by hand and completing the entire project in just 30 days. For years, it was a meaningful feature at Riverfront Park before needing to be removed when the park and adjacent bicycle and pedestrian pathway were reconfigured.

The City carefully stored the bricks over the past several years while searching for the right location to bring this special piece of public art back to the community. We are excited that it has now found its new home at Chase Park.

A tremendous thank you goes to our City of Wenatchee Parks team, whose hard work, care, and attention to detail made the reconstruction of the Labyrinth possible.

Today, Mayor Poirier joined Ada, her family, friends, and members of the community to celebrate its return. In a fitting final moment, Ada helped place the last two bricks into the Labyrinth with a little assistance from some enthusiastic kiddos!

It was a special moment honoring Ada’s original vision while celebrating the restoration of it for a new generation to enjoy.

Improvements Coming to 9th Street!

Starting Monday, August 10, work officially begins on our 9th Street Railroad Crossing Improvement Project! The main goal of this project is to make the crossing significantly safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers—including adding new sidewalks where there currently are none.
What you need to know during construction:
• Traffic Control: Expect a lane shift and shoulder closure during the project.
• Business Access: Detours will be in place, but access to all local businesses will remain open.
• Railroad Crossing Closure: The crossing will be fully closed for about two weeks. We’ll share the confirmed closure dates as soon as they’re finalized.
• Timeline: Construction is expected to take about 7 weeks from start to finish.
This critical safety project is primarily funded by the Washington State Department of Transportation’s Railway-Highway Crossing Program.

If you’ve recently taken a walk along the Apple Capital Loop Trail and glanced over at the Wenatchee Wastewater Treatment Plant, you’ve probably noticed a lot going on and a ton of torn-up ground! This past April, we officially broke ground on a brand-new Administration Building for the treatment plant. The original building served the City well, but it had reached the end of its useful life, and our team needed more space. The new 5,500-square-foot facility will feature a modern control room for operators to monitor plant performance, a laboratory, a conference room, a breakroom, and dedicated staff offices.

Here’s a cool engineering fact about the build: the structure will sit on 39 micropiles! What’s a micropile? Because the treatment plant sits on the footprint of the old city landfill, the surrounding ground is too unstable for standard foundations. Micropiles are small-diameter elements drilled deep into the ground until they hit solid bedrock, then reinforced with steel and high-strength concrete to create a bedrock-anchored foundation.

The project is moving right along and is scheduled for completion in April 2027!
