Every salmon has a journey 🐟

On World Fish Migration Day, we celebrate the incredible migration of salmon, traveling hundreds of miles from the ocean back to the streams where they were born. Along the way, they support forests, wildlife, ecosystems and communities across the Pacific Northwest. Healthy rivers and connected habitats help keep these migrations possible for generations to come.

Today we celebrate the beautiful planet we call home and all of the plants and animals we share it with.

The Upper Columbia spring-run Chinook salmon has been an ESA-listed 'Endangered' species since 1999. Habitat loss remains one of the most significant threats to our salmon populations, but there are ways you can help:

🐟 Volunteer to help with a local stream restoration project
🐟 Avoid disturbing spawning areas
🐟 Plant a buffer of native riparian vegetation if you own land next to a stream or river
🐟 Don't leave trash or fishing gear on the riverbank or in the water
🐟 Clean your boat and equipment after every trip
🐟 Attend to any fluid leaks from your car or boat
🐟 Decrease the amount of chemicals you use on your lawn or garden
🐟 ADVOCATE for clean, healthy waterways

Lower Peshastin Creek Restoration

This project by Cascade Fisheries involved redirecting a portion of the Lower Peshastin to near its historic channel and placing wood structures strategically along the new stretch of river. 1100 ft. of new primary channel was created and 800 ft. of existing channel was restored into secondary channel. This work has reengaged the floodplain and created vital resting and rearing habitat for salmon.

Around $300,000 was reinvested in Chelan County through this work, including ~$160,000 to local contractors, ~$60,000 to local businesses and ~$80,000 generated in local sales tax. Improvements were made to an important public recreation site through the creation of hiking trails and installation of interpretive signage.

The restored floodplain was designed to reconnect the river to its natural overflow areas, allowing high water to spread out rather than concentrate in a single channel. During the 2025 flooding, this reduced pressure on banks, slowed water velocities, and minimized erosion. As a result, the project area remained stable and functioned as intended, absorbing and conveying floodwaters while protecting surrounding habitats and communities.

When funds are available, the UCSRB will award small grants for innovative programs or activities that benefit salmon recovery efforts within the Upper Columbia region. Proposed work to be implemented must directly connect to salmon recovery through habitat recovery, monitoring, maintenance and stewardship, adaptive management or outreach.

Applications are due by Friday, February 27, 2026. Maximum request per organization cannot exceed $10,000. Applications can be found at https://www.ucsrb.org/what-we-do/funding/
