☀️ Summer isn't done with us yet. The National Weather Service is calling for another heat wave this week, with temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 90s. Happy September, right?

Remember that if you must be outdoors, stay hydrated. Take breaks if you can. Watch for signs of heat illness. Check in on those vulnerable to heat. NEVER leave any person or pets in a locked car.

Hopefully, this is the last major heat wave of the year. Stay cool, Wendell!

🐜 Project Antenna Update! We have some good news to share this Friday from our ants study at Wendell Park.

The number of ants in the traps is increasing! Partly due to the season as colony sizes grow. We don't have historical data yet to compare to past years, though. This year will serve as a baseline on if efforts are working.

Dr. Hayes and his team have said that they have noticed some areas having fewer ants than before.

As for the bait: it is definitely being consumed! We're seeing an average of just over half of the bait put out being consumed weekly over the past ~2 months. The past drought actually helped with that. More bait taken = less ants overall.

The NC State team is entering their final stretch of fieldwork at Wendell Park for the year, with ideas for next year. We're eager to share that they will be out at our annual Treat Trail this Halloween to share what they are doing! More to come.

Need to catch up on the project? Visit townofwendellnc.gov/ants.
