Home heating fires are the leading cause of home fire deaths. While you warm up from this weekend's chilly temperatures, make sure you follow a few simple safety tips and precautions so you can prevent a fire in your home.

1️⃣ Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove or portable space heater.
2️⃣ Never use your oven to heat your home.
3️⃣ Remember to turn off portable heaters when leaving the room or going to bed.
4️⃣ Test smoke alarms at least once a month.

“If, as Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “taxes are what we pay for civilized society,” mask-wearing is the cost of a respectful one, where we do unto others.”

Ruth Marcus, The Washington Post
